TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Did you know horsepower was a marketing unit created in the late 18th century to sell steam engines? It measured how many horses one steam engine could replace. Funny enough, James Watt (for whom the standard unit of power is named) is the one who invented it.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Oktoberfest starts this week

  • Y’ollk’s opening date

  • Free trees

Let’s get to it.

— Ryan Sneddon

P.S. Happy birthday, David Waghelstein!

Don’t Toss That Receipt

Your Annapolis Mall shopping trip could do a little more.

With School Cents, purchases you're already making can earn points for a favorite participating local school. Shop or dine at the mall, save your receipt, then snap a photo and upload it through the School Cents app or website. That's it.

Every dollar spent earns five points, and the more points a school collects, the bigger its share of up to $15,000. Even better, select stores, restaurants, and events offer bonus points throughout the program.

So whether you're grabbing new fall clothes, meeting friends for dinner, or making a quick mall run, don't forget that last step.

Shop. Save the receipt. Support a local school.

P.S. Annapolis Mall is also hiring a part-time Social Media Coordinator. Check out the opening here.

Public hearing: Fresh Royal Farms concept on Forest Drive

Architect’s conceptual drawing of the Fresh Market at Forest Drive

Royal Farms’ plans for the old Annapolis Seafood Market site are up for a public hearing before the Planning Commission Thursday night. But this isn’t your average gas station. (Dear RoFo superfans, please don’t hate us for calling it an “average gas station.”)

  • 🐔 Much more than gas – The application is for a brand new concept Royal Farms is calling a Fresh Market. Current plans show 10 fuel pumps (20 fueling spots) but they’re on the back of the property. The front has a 7,200-square-foot market & retail building and an additional 2,700-square-foot retail property.

Plans also show a plaza along Forest Drive with public benches and outdoor dining. All in all, the 2.2-acre site would have 58 parking spots and 8 EV chargers.

Thursday isn’t the first time the plans have come before the commission but it is the first public hearing. AKA this is your chance to speak up for or against the project.

STEIN THERE, DONE THAT

Oktoberfest season is here 🥨

Old Stein Inn’s suckling pig has already been picked clean. But all other Oktoberfest fun is still ahead of you.

🇩🇪 Old Stein Inn in Edgewater launches its Oktoberfest menu tomorrow then turns the biergarten over to German bands on Sundays from 2 to 5 PM – Heidi Und The Heimat Echo on September 20, Elena on the accordion September 27, and The Polka Terps October 4. Resy takes parties of six or fewer; bigger groups call 410-798-6807.

🍺 Garten in Severna Park kicks off Saturday at 11 AM with a live polka band, food and drink specials, and its annual stein holding competition. The Oktoberfest menu runs through October 4, and the kids get their own day on September 26 with alpine horn demos and a free root beer stein hold.

🥨 West Annapolis Oktoberfest is still the big one: Sunday, September 27 from 11 AM to 4 PM on Annapolis Street with RAR Brewing and Chessie’s Wharf pouring and local restaurants and food trucks cooking. Admission is 100% free. Steins of beer are not.

🎸 Mother’s Peninsula Grille in Arnold bats last on October 10 at 11 AM with German specials, another stein holding competition, and live music from Lower Case Blues and Higher Education. Tickets in advance or pay the cover at the door.

Primary Care, Without the Runaround

Need to ask your doctor a question? It shouldn’t always mean waiting weeks for an appointment, sitting on hold, or squeezing everything into a rushed visit.

That’s where Warrior Medical does primary care differently. Through Direct Primary Care, patients get more time with their provider, unlimited visits, and quick text access when questions come up. It’s personalized care from someone who has the time to understand your health, follow your progress, and help you stay ahead of concerns instead of only addressing them when something goes wrong.

Primary care should feel this personal—and this easy.

In other news. . .

🛥 Annapolis Yacht Club 🤝 Annapolis City Marina – The membership of the Annapolis Yacht Club voted last night to approve the club’s purchase of the Annapolis City Marina. The $10.75 million deal will give AYC control of the fuel dock (which will remain open to the public), about 50 boat slips (which will not be open to the public), and 53 additional full-time parking spots (116 after 5 PM and on weekends). When asked about the marina’s current tenants, club leadership said there’s no policy yet.

P.S. Although the name implies otherwise, Annapolis City Marina is not a public marina owned by the City of Annapolis.

🏫 Concrete Plans – The school board takes public testimony on Superintendent Mark Bedell’s Fiscal Year 2028 capital budget tomorrow at 6:45 PM, then adopts the budget and the six-year construction plan later in the meeting. Sign-ups to speak have closed, but written comment is open until noon today, and the meeting streams on AACPS-TV and YouTube.

🌳 Tree’s Company – Registration opens today for the city’s fall tree giveaway, a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. Annapolis is chasing a 50% tree canopy by 2050 and has been parked in the low 40s for more than a decade. Details.

🍕 Slice of History – Neo Pizza & Taphouse poured its last pint at Annapolis Town Center Monday night, closing after nearly a decade. Annapolis was the chain’s last outpost standing after Towson, Owings Mills, and Columbia locations shut down in recent years. Regulars got one final round of Monday trivia to say goodbye.

🥐 Let’s Get Crackin’ – Y’ollk Bakery finally has an opening date. The French-inspired patisserie at 489 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park announced its grand opening for Saturday at 9 AM. The name is an portmanteau (one of our favorite words) of eggs and the word “y’all” because “this bakery is truly for everyone.” Sure enough, it will feature traditional and French baking techniques alongside Filipino ingredients. Co-owner Marie Cris Garay is from the Philippines.

🧀 Grate Expectations – Lures Bar & Grille in Crownsville runs its fifth annual Grilled Cheese Fest Friday through Sunday, and the whole thing is built on sixes: six craft grilled cheeses, six house-made soups, and six limited Other Half beers. Pick a sandwich, pair it with a soup and a beer, and let somebody else do the dishes.
