TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Ecuador fans put an Ecuador shirt on Philadelphia’s famous Rocky statue before their match Ivory Coast last night.

I guess the Rocky Curse (Philadelphia Eagles opponents who have tried this typically get stomped afterwards) applies to American football and The Beautiful Game.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • City permit workshop

  • El Cabrito

  • AACPS summer meals

Let’s get to it.

Celebrating Community at Yoga Factory

One of the things that makes Yoga Factory so special is the incredible community that fills our studios every day. From first-time students to longtime practitioners, our members create an atmosphere of support, encouragement, and connection that extends far beyond the yoga studio.

This year, we were honored to recognize Mike Manning as one of our Honorary Staff Members. Mike embodies the spirit of Yoga Factory through his positivity, dedication, and genuine care for the people around him. Whether showing up consistently to practice, or sharing a smile and a kind word, he helps make our studio feel like home.

Our Honorary Staff Member program celebrates members who contribute to our community in meaningful ways. Mike's recognition reflects the many ways our members support one another and create the welcoming environment we're proud of.

At Yoga Factory, we're more than a yoga studio. We're a community of people who show up for themselves and for each other. We're grateful for members like Mike, and every person who helps make this a special place to practice, grow, and connect.

Congratulations, Mike, and thank you for being such an important part of the Yoga Factory family!

WIND AND PUNISHMENT

Friday's storm left hundreds of homes in the dark ⚡

Photo: City of Annapolis

Friday night reminded us who's really in charge here. Hint: it’s Mother Nature.

A severe storm tore through Anne Arundel County, with the National Weather Service clocking gusts of 70 to 80 mph — and one 83 mph reading just southeast of Parole. Trees came down on roads and houses, and two families were displaced when trees fell on their homes. No one was hurt in Anne Arundel, but there were two fatalities in Montgomery and PG Counties.

  • Hardest hit: West Annapolis and Admiral Heights, where city crews worked overnight to clear roads.

BGE reported nearly 800 Annapolis customers still without power by noon Saturday, and Mayor Jared Littmann warned that damaged substations could make full restoration slow. Sandy Point State Park was closed Saturday but reopened yesterday.

GAVEL UP

The County Council's back Monday for a zoning veto fight ⚖️

With the $2.58 billion budget across the finish line, the County Council is back to business as usual.

They meet tonight, June 15, at 7 PM in the Arundel Center, and the marquee item is a veto showdown. County Executive Steuart Pittman line-item vetoed Bill 18-26, the comprehensive rezoning of Region 5 — Odenton, Crofton, Gambrills, Piney Orchard, and Two Rivers — and the council decides whether to override him.

  • Also up for a final vote: how far a licensed cannabis dispensary has to sit from homes, sensitive facilities, and the next dispensary over.

Rounding out the night: charter amendments that would make the County Attorney a joint hire of the executive and council, plus new rules for freestanding signs and the Resilience Authority. The public's welcome to pull up a chair. Full agenda here.

Healthcare That Actually Feels Personal

The best healthcare isn't rushed. It's having the time to ask questions, discuss concerns, and work with a provider who sees the bigger picture—not just a list of symptoms.

That's the approach at Warrior Medical. Through personalized primary care, their team takes the time to understand your health, your goals, and what's really going on beneath the surface.

For some patients, that conversation may include Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), a personalized treatment designed to help support energy, wellness, and overall quality of life.

Because better healthcare starts with having a provider who truly knows you.

In other news. . .

🏗️ Talk of the Town – The city wants to hear your permitting horror stories (and constructive ideas). The "Let's Talk Permitting" workshop runs Tuesday, June 16, from 7 to 8:15 PM at the Pip Moyer Rec Center, where the staff who actually review building, grading, and stormwater plans will field questions. The city says permits now move nearly 50% faster than in 2023. RSVP here.

🍎 Lunch Money – AACPS restarts the summer meals program Wednesday, June 17, serving $0 meals to any kid ages 2 to 18 — no income check, no paperwork. There are 24 open sites in all: five fixed spots running Monday through Thursday, plus mobile delivery to 19 neighborhoods from North County to South County. Find a site here.

🏄 Stand and Deliver – The East of Maui Stand Up Challenge paddles back for its 14th year on Saturday, June 27, this time benefiting the EWE Spirit Foundation. Racing starts at 8 AM in Annapolis Harbor and the mouth of the Severn, with 7-mile, 3.5-mile, and one-mile options — plus a free kids' race on loaner boards for ages 8 to 13. Awards and live music follow at Eastport Yacht Club. Sign up here.

🌮 New Kid in Town – We’ve got a new taqueria (from a familiar face). El Cabrito, a Mexican restaurant and bar, opened at 1576 Whitehall Road this weekend — though the same Friday storm that darkened half of Annapolis knocked out its power and bumped the grand opening from Saturday to Sunday. You missed the dollar tacos and free margaritas, but the pastor, carnitas, and chicken aren't going anywhere.
