TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Annapolis. It’s a well-known fact that little old Annapolis was the capital of the United States for about 9 months in the 80s (the 1780s, that is). But did you know that Lancaster, PA was the capital of the U.S. for exactly one day in 1777?

With the British closing in on Philadelphia, the Continental Congress fled to Lancaster. They quickly decided that was still too close and fled further to York, PA, which remained the capital for 8 months and 28 days, just 4 more days than Annapolis.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • USNA Induction Day

  • Where to vote

  • Curmudgeon Books

Let’s get to it.

POLL POSITION

Your cheat sheet for Tuesday's Maryland primary in Annapolis 🗳️

Maryland primary election polls open tomorrow. If you're fuzzy on where to go or who you're even voting for, here's the rundown.

Polls are open 7 AM to 8 PM (Tuesday, June 23). It's a closed primary, so you can only vote in the party you're registered with. Same-day registration is available with a MD license, permit, or ID plus proof of address. One catch: you must vote at your assigned polling place, or you'll be handed a provisional ballot. Find yours.

The local ballot:

  • County Executive (CE) – There’s no incumbent with Steuart Pittman nearing the end of his second term.

    • Democratic candidates: James Kitchin (Special Assistant to the CE), Allison Pickard (County Council), and Pete Smith (County Council).

    • Republican candidates: Dave Crawford (chief of Earleigh Heights VFC)

  • County Council District 6 – This one’s crowded and again, no incumbent with Lisa Rodvien not pursuing a third term.

    • Democratic candidates: Gavin Buckley (former mayor of Annapolis), Katie McDermott (former City Council candidate), Dominik Prokop (pool management company owner), Joe Toolan (nonprofit director), and Sean David White (carpenter).

    • Republican candidates: George Gallagher (biotech consultant)

  • County Council District 5 – not much of a primary here since both are running unopposed

    • Democratic candidates: Natalie Ogilvie (small business owner)

    • Republican candidates: Amanda Fiedler (incumbent)

  • Sheriff

    • Democratic candidates: Everett Sesker (incumbent)

    • Republican candidates: Jim Fredericks (former Sheriff, 2018–2022) and James McNeill (business owner and former police officer)

ALL HANDS ON DECK

Naval Academy inducts the Class of 2030 on Thursday ⚓

Naptown Scoop photo

1,100 young men and women will walk onto the Yard on Thursday as civilians. 13 hours later, they’ll march into Bancroft Hall as plebes, aka Naval Academy freshmen. Complete with a (probably) scratchy new uniform and much less hair.

  • Not your average first day – Naval Academy first-years don’t show up in August wondering which parties they’ll get invited to that weekend. Instead, they spend 7 weeks getting indoctrinated in tradition, enduring intense physical training, and learning Naval service basics (seamanship, small arms, etc.). It’s called Plebe Summer and it all starts with Induction Day.

Processing begins at 6:15 AM in Alumni Hall. By processing, we mean contraband disposal, medical screening, uniforms and haircuts, and most importantly, Reef Points distribution – the Academy’s 225-page handbook. They will be quizzed on it early and often.

Then they meet their detailers, upperclassmen who train them all summer long, and unpack. At 6 PM, they take the Oath of Office in T-Court in front of the imposing Bancroft Hall. Afterwards, it’s family time before the march into Mother B (Bancroft’s nickname).

  • Mail time: Once Bancroft’s doors slam, the next time plebes see their families is Plebe Parents’ Weekend (Aug 6–9). In the meantime, they can receive and write letters and get two 30-minute phone calls (audio only).

In other news. . .

🏛️ Council in session – Annapolis City Council meets tonight at 7 PM. Up for discussion: a proposal letting residents and their guests legally block their own driveway, a $573,400 parking-budget bump, and shrinking the Human Relations Commission from 15 members to nine. Poet Laureate Jefferson Holland kicks things off with an America 250 reading. Full agenda.

🚑 Just a test – On Tuesday (6/23) from 9 AM to noon, the Naval Academy, Naval Support Activity Annapolis, and local emergency crews will run a training exercise at the Academy. Expect extra emergency vehicles, aircraft, and possible loud noises (they say no gunshots or explosions) near downtown. There's no threat to the public.

📚 Turning a new page – Curmudgeon Books is now open at Annapolis Mall, easing in with a soft opening before its full debut. The family-owned indie bookstore, formerly of Marley Station Mall in Glen Burnie, brings a curated mix of books to the mall's growing lineup of local tenants.

📵 Fake news – An Instagram account impersonating AACPS has been posting wild stuff (like fish in toilets and a “safer snorting” drug use workshop). It appears someone gained access to a former AACPS account; prior to last week, the account in question was posting what appears to be legit info. It also has a plausible username and a verified checkmark. Although, checkmarks can be bought for $12 per month these days. AACPS only has two IG accounts: @aacountyschools and @aacpsspanish.

🌏 A Whole New World (Market) – World Market opens Friday, June 26 at 160 Jennifer Road, the chain's first Anne Arundel County store, in the old Modell's space next to Trader Joe's at Annapolis Plaza. The 16,800-square-foot shop stocks the usual globe-trotting furniture, décor, gifts, and gourmet food, plus a new Asian Market aisle running from Buldak ramen to collectible Kit Kats. Ribbon cutting is 9:45 AM Friday, with tastings and giveaways all weekend.
