TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Parisians are up in arms about Shein opening a brick-and-mortar store yesterday in the most fashionable city in the world. Understandable, there’d be riots in the streets if someone tried to open a Red Lobster on Main Street.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Key Bridge 2.0

  • Furloughed workers support

  • When it’s okay to say “take a hike”

Let’s get to it.

— Lauren Burke Meyer, Dylan Roche, & Duffy Perkins

And your next mayor is… 🗳️

If this is the first thing you’re checking this morning (and hey, we hope it is — we’re flattered), you might be wondering about the results of yesterday’s election. Bear in mind that the races, as they stand right now, reflect in-person ballots from yesterday. We’re still waiting on the official results including drop-offs, mail-ins, and provisionals. But the unofficial voting results report gives us an idea who the likely winners are. (Some races are currently closer than others, and Robert O’Shea has already conceded to Jared Littmann in the mayoral race.)

The results are:

Mayor: Jared Littmann

Ward 1: Tom Krieck
Ward 2: Karma O’Neill
Ward 3: Keanuú Smith-Brown
Ward 4: Janice Allsup Johnson
Ward 5: Brooks Schandelmeier
Ward 6: Diesha Contee
Ward 7: Rob Savidge
Ward 8: Frank Thorp

THE DIGEST

AACFD graduates newest class 🧑‍🚒

Huge congrats are in order for the 63 graduates of the latest Anne Arundel County Fire Department’s Fire Academy. Recruit Class 65 has trained intensely for the last nine months in emergency medical services, firefighting, and more. As Fire Chief Trisha Wolford said at the ceremony, “You are a public servant who will arrive at work for the sole purpose of serving others and putting the needs of a stranger ahead of your own needs. You are now a part of something greater than yourself.” Your communities are grateful, Recruit Class 65!

Reminder: Bay Bridge Run on Sunday, expect delays 🚗

If you’re planning on driving anywhere near the Bay Bridge on Sunday — don’t. You can if you really need to, but the eastbound span will be closed for the annual Bay Bridge Run. The westbound span will still be open with one lane of traffic in each direction. Expect the race to be over and the bridge fully reopened by 2 PM.

🔎 What’s the Bay Bridge Run? This 10K starts in Annapolis and runs over the Bay Bridge to Kent Island. Between 15K and 20K runners participate every year, many of them coming from out of state. 2025 is sold out, but if you’ve never done it, consider registering next year.

New Key Bridge designs released ✍️

And now some news from (slightly) north of us: Last week, Maryland Transportation Authority released the latest designs of the new Key Bridge in Baltimore. This is a huge step forward for a traffic project that affects not only all of Maryland and the Chesapeake region but also the nation (it links major East Coast routes to the Port of Baltimore). It will be much bigger than the old Key Bridge, which collapsed after a contain ship struck it in 2024. The redesigned bridge will reach 230 feet above the water with 600-foot towers (compared to 185 feet above the water and 358-foot towers). An official budget and timeline is TBD, but early estimates say the bridge could cost up to $2 billion and be finished in fall 2028. ($)

Furloughed workers support ❤️

Despite uncertain times, one thing’s for certain. Annapolis cares. Last week, we shared Bread and Butter Kitchen's Furlough Friday, where furloughed government employees can get a free meal by showing their work ID. It made us wonder . . . Who else is supporting them?

🧘 groundswell yoga annapolis: With intel from Scoop writer and groundswell owner Duffy Perkins, furloughed workers can use the code FAMILY for a free class. Namaste, Duffy.

🎶 Live Arts Maryland offers a “Pay What You Can” ticket for Music of the Spheres on Saturday, November 15, at 7:30 PM. Click “Get Tickets” to find the deal.

🚍 Transportation: Maryland Transit Administration will provide free rides on MARC and Commuter Bus services for federal workers showing ID during the shutdown.

🧘 Yoga Factory: Scoop’s friend has offered free classes since the shutdown began. They’re also offering discounts to those who want to start up a yoga practice during this time. Call 410-533-1908 for details.

🥫 SNAP Update: County Exec Steuart Pittman announced plans to give $500,000 in emergency funds to the Anne Arundel County Food Bank for residents affected by the federal government shutdown and delayed SNAP benefits. The money will come from the county’s $10 million federal disaster response fund that was included in the FY26 budget. Food distributions begin Monday (Nov. 10), 3–6 PM (or until food runs out). Find out where.

Dog of the Week: Meet Willow! 🐾

We’ll keep this story light and fluffy — an easy feat because we found Zoey’s long-lost twin sister! It’s a real Puppy Parent Trap story. The evidence: We just realized that Willow and Zoey are both German Shepherd mixes with caramel glaze-colored coats and the precise age of 6 years and 10 days. Seriously, what are the odds? It’s too coincidental. Like her sis, Willow is a sweet girl who loves long walks and can’t get enough hiking adventures. And, as all German Shepherd lovers know, this breed has smarts, trainability, and protective instincts.

Don’t make this a “his-and-hers” story where the pups never get to play together. Adopt them both from SPCA’s Wing 3!

LOCAL BUSINESS

FutureCare opens in Annapolis 🛏️

The future of healthcare and rehab is looking better, now that FutureCare has opened its latest location in Annapolis. The rehab and nursing care facility at 2700 S. Haven Rd is the 16th FutureCare in the Baltimore-Washington region. It has 150 beds for inpatient/outpatient care after medical procedures and brings 200+ jobs to the community. With that kind of news, how can we not feel better already?

Design District facility bought for $9 million+ 🏬

Annapolis is all about hot crabs and hot properties, it seems. The building located at 1812-1820 Margaret Avenue, currently the home to Local by Design and Fast Signs, sold for $9.13 million. The “asset” (we love Real-Estate-Tycoon-speak) was represented by the national firm Marcus & Millichap and offered “a unique mix of warehouse and showroom space not commonly found in the submarket.” It’s good to see the Design District given some love, and the respect it deserves.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

National Take a Hike Day 🥾

When is it socially acceptable to tell someone to “take a hike”? Apparently, on Monday, November 17. Who knew? Lace up and hit the trail with rangers, volunteers, and fellow adventurers. Hikes are free and typically 2–3 miles long. Bring sturdy footwear, binoculars, a camera, and water. Before you dig out those boots, register for one of these hikes hosted by Anne Arundel Recreation and Parks:

  • 10 AM–Noon: Downs Park, Kinder Farm Park, Quiet Waters Park, Lake Waterford Park, Fort Smallwood Park, Beverly Triton Nature Park, and Glendening Nature Preserve.

  • 1–3 PM: For later risers, Broad Creek Park is your go-to.

The #2 way to make fundraisers better

What’s the first way? No idea. But the #2 way is definitely luxury bathroom trailers. People have called Royal Flush’s bathrooms the “nicest bathrooms I’ve ever seen” and “better than the bathrooms in my house.” And that’s not made-up marketing talk. Those are real quotes we’ve heard on the job. Want your guests to say the same? Studies show that guests who like the bathrooms donate more+. Call Royal Flush at 410-881-6848 to secure the finest bathrooms in town.*
