TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. On today’s episode of Annapolis’ indecisive weather, morning temps plunge from the high 50s to the 30s, with possible afternoon rain — and even snow — showers. Before you head out, grab layers, an umbrella, and waterproof footwear.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • World famous Irish Waterfall

  • South River b-ball reaches State Championship

  • Blue Angels cruise tickets

Let’s get to it.

Call for artists: DTA billboard edition 🎨

Historic Annapolis

Artwork always makes a nice birthday gift. So Historic Annapolis has decided to celebrate the USA’s upcoming 250th with artwork — specifically, artwork that depicts our city’s role in our nation’s founding. And more specifically, on a billboard.

  • And they want your help: Historic Annapolis is seeking artwork showing the “pride and enduring spirit of Annapolis.” The winning design will grace a downtown billboard overlooking City Dock from June to the end of August.

There are small cash prizes for finalists as well, but the billboard’s the real prize in our opinion. Your prompt is history marches on. HA says submissions should “creatively weave together elements of Annapolis’ unique history while imagining its future.

  • How to submit: First of all, hurry. The deadline is April 6. Second, you can see more prompt information (and see the nitty gritty details we don’t understand like bleed and file specs) on HA’s website. Third, don’t forget to read the fine print – no AI allowed.

BOOKS

Chesapeake Chapters: THE LAST ASSIGNMENT 📸

Erika Robuck

Book Club President Lauren reporting for duty. Our local author scene really is the best — I’m still riding the high from my group’s in-person meeting with Annapolis National bestselling author Erika Robuck last week to discuss her newest novel, THE LAST ASSIGNMENT.

  • Like many of her historical fiction titles, Erika shines a spotlight on remarkable women cast in the shadows of our history. This time, it’s award-winning photojournalist Georgette “Dickey” Chapelle — one of the first female war correspondents.

Almost a decade after her arrest for disobeying orders at Iwo Jima, she finds her credentials revoked, marriage failing, and savings dwindling. Refusing the sidelines, she grabs her camera and follows soldiers across the globe, risking everything to become the world’s witness to battle — and perhaps reclaim her own life.

Dickey's nearly 20-year career spans multiple wars, and she’s one of the most compelling characters I’ve ever read. Her spirit won’t leave me any time soon. Also: carrying around this 400-plus-page book made me look like a boss. Historical fiction used to intimidate me, but thanks to Erika, I’ve officially arrived. Grab a copy basically anywhere they sell books, or shop local at Erika’s neighbor, Old Fox Books.
