THE DIGEST
Mayor and City Council inauguration
Getting back to work after the long Thanksgiving weekend is always a little tough. But for some incoming city officials, that’s going to be their first day on a new job. Mayor-elect Jared Littmann and the eight members of the Annapolis City Council begin their terms on Monday, December 1, with a swearing-in ceremony at 2:30 PM at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The inauguration is free and open to the public; it’ll be followed by a ticketed reception at 4:30 PM in the N* Room.
That’s not a typo. The N* is an 8,500 square-foot banquet hall at the stadium.
Planning to go? Shuttles will circulate on inauguration day, and there’s free parking at the stadium via Gate 5 (Taylor Avenue) and Gate 2 (Farragut Road).
Is this next school year’s calendar? 🗓️
Parents, have you ever wished summer break ended a little earlier? You might be getting your wish. The AACPS Board of Ed just recommended a 2026-2027 school year calendar sending the kids back to school on August 19. The school year would end June 11 and would include a 2-week winter break, 1-week Thanksgiving break, 1-week spring break, days off for Yom Kippur, Election Day, and Eid al-Fitr, and non-student days at the end of each marking period. The board will discuss the calendar at its December 3 meeting to determine whether to officially adopt it.
USNA class of ’26 gets career assignments ⚓️
Plans for after graduation? The Naval Academy’s seniors are currently considering theirs. Last week, they got their service assignments. The Department of the Navy leadership assigns these to the graduating mids based on their preferences and skills. The mids get to submit 6 job preferences, and most of the time, they get what they want — this year, 79% got their first choice, and a combined 94% got either their first or second choice.
The most popular assignment for the class of 2026? Also one of the coolest. Pilot, with 237 of the 1K graduating mids, followed by 201 to surface warfare (AKA ships) and 178 to USMC ground service.

NAPTOWN SCOOP LOCAL BUSINESS IS POWERED BY. . .
Protecting the city’s largest remaining forest 🌳
“City” and “forest” aren’t words you typically hear together. But Annapolis is making a point to protect 123.1 acres of forested land. That’s one of the largest intact forests within city limits, and it’s now under a conservation easement thanks to the Scenic Rivers Land Trust. The property is officially known as Mas Que Farm, owned by Janet Richardson-Pearson. It has woodlands, streams, wetlands — basically, the kind of ecological diversity you don’t expect to find in a city.
The property is next to the Village at Providence Point, a hotly contested senior living community, also on land owned by Janet Richardson-Pearson. Though Providence Point has been fought over for years under different names, the project broke ground last month.

Out of town trip: Baltimore Holiday Markets
Ok, so you can’t travel to Europe for Christmas markets this season. We can’t either. Instead of getting mad about it and blocking friends on their way to Munich right now, we’re going to hunker down and take delight in the next best thing: Baltimore’s Christmas markets. It’s like telling a marathoner that you just signed up for a Family Fun Mile, but you’re still getting out there.
Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Christmas Market This German-inspired market brings more than 60 vendors to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, along with an ice skating rink, festival of trees, and vintage carousel. Foods like Raclette cheese, Belgian fries, schnitzel, and mulled wine will have you singing “Frohe Weihnachten” to everyone you meet. Open now through Dec. 24 from noon daily; closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
American Visionary Art Museum’s Bazaarart AVAM has one of the coolest gift shops of any museum anywhere, and this weekend’s holiday market promises to be nothing short of ultra cool crafting and one-of-a-kind items. Fri., Nov. 28 from Noon to 5 PM; Sat., Nov. 29 from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Fells Point Old Tyme Christmas Head up to Fells Point early next Saturday morning to see Santa make an appearance by tugboat. CIVIL NEWS
Jake Trudeau serves as acting finance director 💵
Help wanted in Annapolis: new finance director. Brittany Moran, who has filled the position since March, is stepping down. While the city’s human resource department does a nationwide search for a permanent replacement, budget manager Jake Trudeau will serve as acting finance director. Don’t expect any interruptions to city operations or financial functions. And even though Mayor Buckley is still in office right now, the final appointment for a new finance director will happen under Jared Littmann’s incoming administration.

Blake Horvath for Heisman?
Navy’s star QB just got an awesome call. He’s on the Heisman Trophy radar. With nearly 1,000 yards rushing (the most per game by any college QB) and 1,200+ passing, the senior signal-caller has powered the Mids to an 8-1 record and is rewriting record books. If he gets the nod, he'd join Navy legend Keenan Reynolds as a Heisman finalist; Reynolds finished fifth in Heisman balloting in 2015. The official finalists are announced Monday, December 8. Let’s go, Blake!
