THE DIGEST

Naval Academy superintendent says commandant ‘had to be removed’

The word “tight-lipped” has us hanging on every word of this news story. For the first time publicly, Naval Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michael Borgschulte took responsibility for firing Commandant Gilbert Clark less than six months into his tenure, saying Clark failed to uphold academy standards and “had to be removed.” Borgschulte, who became superintendent in August when he replaced Vice Adm. Yvette Davids, told the board of visitors he’s faced major challenges in his first months, including a midshipman’s suicide, the Sept. 11 incident that put a student in the hospital, and the government shutdown. Capt. Austin Jackson is serving as interim commandant while the search for a permanent replacement continues. ($)

Semifinalists for the 2026 Anne Arundel County Public Schools Teacher of the Year award

Hey parents – this is a quick reminder that the holidays are coming up, and your kids’ teachers deserve some seriously nice gifts for educating the next generation of Annapolitans. That said, the County always singles out teachers who go the extra distance, and they recently announced the 18 semifinalists for the annual AACPS Teacher of the Year Award (88 were on the original list). But to all teachers – you’re all the best in our books. And may your gift cards overfloweth.

Dog of the Week: Meet Cash and Penny 🐾

“Two for one” is always nice to hear when you’re counting cash or saving pennies. And if you’d like to bring Cash and Penny into your house . . . well, you’ll be getting two for one. That’s because this unlikely duo at the SPCA (a big male German Shepard and a little female terrier mix) are a bonded pair. They love each other dearly and must be adopted into the same home.

Cash is affectionate and under the impression he is still a lap dog, despite his size. Penny is bossy and barky when she needs to be — also despite her size. They love to play together, especially tug of war, so they’re basically like Annapolis and Eastport in dog form. We’ll let you decide who’s who. They’ve been with the SPCA since June and are available for visits.

NAPTOWN SCOOP LOCAL BUSINESS IS POWERED BY. . .

Meet Señor’s Market

Señor’s Market, the Latin market going in the Bay Ridge Shopping Mall, posted an update on social media addressing the extended buildout. Coming “early 2026,” the market will offer a fresh seafood section and a butcher counter, a deli selling Italian and Latin meat and cheese, and fresh, organic produce. The market is owned and operated by the Salmoran family, who also own Mi Lindo Cancun Grill in Annapolis and Señor’s Chile. We have been eagerly awaiting the opening of the market, and will let you know as soon as we have a date for the ribbon-cutting.

Quiet Waters Park Ice Rink is open ⛸️

Time to break out those Nancy Kerrigan moves! The Quiet Waters Park Ice Rink is open for business. So bundle up and head to 600 Quiet Waters Park Rd in Annapolis to check off this winter bucket-list item. Hours: Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri (3–9 PM); Sat–Sun (9 AM–9 PM); closed Tuesdays. When AACPS schools are closed (Dec. 22–Jan. 2), the rink runs 10 AM–9 PM. Pricing is refreshingly reasonable — think fresh winter air for your wallet: adults $7, seniors (60+) and kids (12 and under) $6. And, if you can’t BYO skates, rentals are just $3.

Watermark holds the Queen of All Fund Drives 🛥️

Santa’s vehicle of choice might be a flying sleigh, but the generous Christmas spirit prefers something more “local” in Annapolis: cruise boat. Specifically, the Harbor Queen. Watermark has decked out its iconic vessel with lights and festive decorations for a special cruise to watch the Eastport Yacht Club’s Lights Parade on Dec. 13, 5-8 PM. But the “Queen of All Fund Drives” is more than just the best view of the lights parade in town — it’s a fundraiser Watermark holds for the Eastport Yacht Club Foundation. While aboard, you’ll get to enjoy music and a full-service cash bar. You don’t even need a ticket — just a $10 donation (or more) or in-kind donations of canned food and gently used winter clothing. Step aboard at City Dock (1 Dock Street, Annapolis).

Want the ultimate Watermark Lights Parade Experience? Grab a ticket aboard the Catherine Marie for a three-course meal preceded by butler-served hors d’Oeuvres and an open beer and wine bar.

CIVIL NEWS

Littmann’s inauguration message: “Annapolis works.”

Jared Littmann was sworn in as the 138th mayor of Annapolis on December 1, and in his first formal address he spoke to a vision of government that “delivers high-quality services in a genuine customer service culture.” Littmann’s campaign focused on ideas that addressed improving city services, streamlining processes, and cutting through red tape, and his speech echoed a commitment to many of those promises. Littmann spent much of his time at the podium addressing local interests, but also addressed the state leaders present and vocalized a commitment to working alongside them for the good of the city.

The inaugural reception and party for Littmann and the new incoming City Council will raise more than $10,000 for Anne Arundel Food Bank. ($)
