THE DIGEST
The biggest stories we covered this week
🏗️ The Anne Arundel County Circuit Court upheld Annapolis’ Historic Preservation Commission approval of the Maritime Welcome Center, a major part of the City Dock refresh.
🚨 There was not an active shooter at the Naval Academy last week. A bogus threat lead a midshipmen to attack a law enforcement officer they thought was a shooter. The mid was shot but survived and the officer was injured.
🗳️ Annapolis Democratic primary: Jared Littmann has a commanding lead (mayor). Harry Huntley leads Ward 1. Keanuú Smith-Brown leads Ward 3. Coren Makell leads Ward 4 by a hair. Craig Cussimanio leads Ward 6. Mailed and provision ballots will be counted next week.
🏨 The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club is building a new 32-room luxury hotel at the Bay Bridge Marina, continuing the hot streak of investment in the area.
Most clicked stories of the week 🏆
Monday: Maryland Restaurant Week: Who’s participating in Annapolis?
Tuesday: Anne Arundel County launches airport shuttle ✈️
Wednesday: New biz, who dis? 👀
Thursday: DNR photo contest winners
Correction: New Annapolitans Book Club 📚
We missed key detail about the New Annapolitans club earlier this week, and we’re very sorry about that. Here’s the full story — a sequel, if you will. They’re a social club with 35 interest groups and love welcoming all newcomers to the Annapolis area, but you must join (or get on their waitlist) within two years of moving here. There’s also a zip code requirement. Get all the details on their website.
Board of Education meeting recap
Wednesday’s Board of Ed meeting was a big one. Here are the high points.
💸 The $230 million FY2027 capital budget got the green light. It includes about $148 million for two new school buildings, pre-K expansions, a new bus facility, and two major renovations. Here’s where the other $82 million is going.
🎒 Redistricting drama continues. The board advanced two proposals — and about a dozen amendments — for public hearing. Expect fireworks at October’s hearings.
📆 The district might ditch early dismissals in favor of full days off. You’ve got ‘til Oct. 1 to weigh in.

NAPTOWN SCOOP LOCAL BUSINESS IS POWERED BY. . .
Foodie Friday: Quick Dinner Options 🍽️
With back-to-school time comes sports and extracurriculars. We’re here, there, and everywhere. Just call us Roy Kent (minus the expletive). When there’s no time to cook, we hit these spots for a quick meal.
🍔 Eastport Kitchen | 923 Chesapeake Ave | Our readers voted it one of the best burgers in Annapolis. So, we’re getting the Kitchen Burger with an egg on top. Order online or call 410-990-0000 (side note: that’s a fantastic phone number).
🍕Bella Italia | 609 Taylor Ave | Every Monday from 4–10 PM, a Large Cheese Pizza is $8.99 — no coupon needed. The perfect excuse for Monday pizza night.
🍣 Yama Sushi Bar | 2049 West St | The Dinosaur Egg appetizer, Dragon Roll, and Pearl Roll are must-orders. Be a hero and ask for sushi-shaped lollipops for the kids!
🦞 Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls | 188 Main Street | Order the Bar Harbor Roll — 50% more lobster for just $5 more than the Classic — for pickup or DoorDash delivery.
🍝 Italian Market | 126 Defense Hwy | Go family style. Order their mouth-watering pastas to share. Suggestions? Tortellini Alla Rosa, Spaghetti Carbonara, and Penne Alla Vodka.
Great Harvest Bakery is a good neighbor
Ever been craving a Chessie Burger and some Drunken Tots only to find that Chessie’s Wharf’s (RAR) tiny parking lot is full and the street’s full and your friend in West Annapolis won’t let you park in her driveway? Same. Great Harvest Bread Company to the rescue!
The bakery – which has a ton of great energy since Joe Kirby bought it earlier this year – won’t be chaining its parking lot after closing time anymore. So as long as the bakery’s closed (a very important stipulation), you can park at Great Harvest to visit other West Annapolis businesses.
🕰️ Great Harvest is open 6 AM – 3 PM every day except Sunday when it’s open 7 AM – 2 PM and Tuesday when it’s 100% closed.

The SPCA of Anne Arundel returns as the festival’s benefactor, pouring beers and showcasing adoptable pups. General admission is just $5 for a drinking wristband, and friendly, leashed dogs are welcome. Rain or shine, it’s the paw-fect way to celebrate fall with your four-legged best friend!

The Sports ETA 45 Summit will be held at the Graduate Hotel next week, with professionals and enthusiasts in the sports tourism community checking out Annapolis as both an example and a potential venue for the future. The Summit brings industry professionals together to discuss strategies for creating tourism around sporting events, with keynote speakers Cal Ripken, Jr. (a local legend), Jameel McClain (Ravens Super Bowl winner), and Crista Samaras (lax legend) delivering ideas on elevating sporting events as destinations.
Annapolis Blues Director of Community Outreach Devin Pugh will even lead a discussion called Building a Community Following. Which makes a lot of sense because the Blues have put on a masterclass in community in their three years of existence.
