TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Election season is mercifully over, meaning no more political text messages for approximately 2 more days! Enjoy the break while it lasts. . .

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • More places to not cook on Thanksgiving

  • Flags on Brewer Hill

  • Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival

Let’s get to it.

PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER

Eastport vs. Annapolis: the Tug of War is Saturday 🪢

Crowds line Second Street in Eastport for the 2024 Tug of War

Photo: Maritime Republic of Eastport

Eastport goes to pretend war with Annapolis on Saturday. The weapon of choice? Rope. The battlefield? Second Street.

The party starts at 10 AM. And at 11:45 AM, the Naptown Brass Band leads a parade of rabble-rousers to open battle. The first of seven heats starts at the crack o’ noon. If you’ve been, you know it’s hard to get a good view unless you’re in the front row. But this year, there’s a big screen with a drone feed. Very high tech, Eastport. Very high tech. . .

The slate, in order:

  • 🚒 The Sirens – Eastport FD vs. Annapolis Police Foundation

  • ⚓ The Land & Sea – Eastport Army vs. Annapolis Navy

  • 🍺 The Bars – 4th Street Bars vs. Annapolis Bars

  • 🎒 The Schools – Eastport ES vs. Annapolis HS

  • 🏛️ The Clubs – Eastport Democratic Club vs. Boys & Girls Club of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County

  • 💪 The Women’s Tug – Eastport Dragon Boat Women vs. Annapolis Women Against Domestic Violence

  • 🏋️ The Athletes – Peake Social vs. Foundation Fitness

Bring the kids. There’s an activity zone with face painting and balloon art. And for the non-tugging grownups, good company and plenty of libations.

Parking will be . . . tight, so take the water taxi, call a rideshare, walk or bike. Or paddleboard. This is Eastport, after all.

Annapolis still needs tuggers, especially for the Navy and the Bars. Sign up here and get a t-shirt.

SECONDS, ANYONE?

More places to eat on Thanksgiving 🦃

Last week we shared some of our picks for restaurants that’ll do the cooking for you on Thanksgiving. Then you shared some of yours. So we put ‘em all in one place. These are the five you shared. And we’re still looking for more if you know of any!

🍺 Rams Head Roadhouse – The Roadhouse on Generals Highway is serving a three-course turkey dinner from 11 AM to 10 PM. You get bisque or salad, hand-carved turkey with all the sides, and pumpkin cheesecake for $32.95. Its downtown sibling, Rams Head Tavern, has the same menu on West Street. Both can also do dinner to go if you order by Monday, November 23. Details.

🏛️ Harry Browne’s – A reader tipped us off that the State Circle staple is open on Thanksgiving. Call 410-263-4332 to grab a table.

🍝 Carpaccio Tuscan Kitchen – A buffet at Park Place with turkey, honey-glazed ham, seafood, and desserts. Seatings are at noon, 2:30, and 5 PM, and you’ll need a reservation.

⚓ Middleton Tavern – The City Dock tavern opens at 1 PM on Thanksgiving and serves its feast until 10 PM.

You don’t need medicine. You need to stretch.

Don’t take it from us. Take it from the Washington Post. As reported by health and wellness columnist Gretchen Reynolds, “If your body is flexible, you’re likely to live longer than someone whose body and joints are tight and rigid, according to the first, large-scale study of the links between flexibility and mortality.” In the study by Claudio Gil S. Araujo, 3,139 men and women between ages 46 and 65 completed an evaluation of overall flexibility.

Researchers followed them for more than a decade. They found that people with the stiffest joints — especially women — were substantially more likely to die prematurely than those with greater flexibility. Assisted stretching decreases pain, improves posture and mobility, and increases longevity. One Scoop reader said StretchMed Annapolis literally changed his life. So what are you waiting for? Book your free intro stretch now!

In other news. . .

🇺🇸 Flags On The Hill – Veterans Day is next Wednesday, but you can start honoring service members this Saturday. Join the Brewer Hill Cemetery Association from 9 to 11 AM to map and mark veterans’ graves with an American flag. Those flags guide the wreath-laying for National Wreaths Across America Day on December 19. Thank you to the BHCA volunteers who keep this historic place beautiful and honor the heroes buried there. If you go, send us a photo so we can share it next week.

🌉 Bridge Closed, Run Open – The eastbound span of the Bay Bridge closes Sunday from midnight to about 2 PM for the Bay Bridge Run. Both directions squeeze onto the westbound span, one lane each way, so MDTA says cross before 6 AM or after 6 PM to avoid traffic. If you’d rather be on the bridge than stuck off of it, race registration stays open until noon Saturday. About 16,000 people are expected after last year’s run was rained out.

🎷 All That Jazz – The Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival is back for its fifth year, spread over two weekends in Eastport churches, clubs, and libraries. It opens tomorrow at 7 PM at St. Luke’s with the Muneer Nasser Band’s tribute to Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Randy Weston. Saturday brings Afro-Peruvian band Perkutao to the Peerless Rens Club, and Sunday has free colonial-era music on period instruments. Most of the events are free. Full schedule.
