Why do we burn socks? 🧦

Naptown Scoop

Among the strange traditions you might observe as a Marylander (like putting Old Bay on literally everything), especially if you’re an Annapolitan, is burning your socks every spring. It’s something locals will do this weekend at the Annapolis Maritime Museum’s Oyster Roast, the Annapolis Running Festival’s afterparty, and in their own backyards. But . . . why?

  • 40+ years of tradition: Sock burning as a spring tradition started with Annapolitan sailor Bob Turner somewhere between the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. He’d had enough of socks after a particularly bad winter — so he burned them. A few of his fellow sailors joined him (beers were probably involved), and it became a tradition every Spring Equinox.

  • Why socks? It’s because socks are a symbol of winter, especially if you’re used to free-toeing it in a pair of boat shoes. When the Wall Street Journal covered this quirky tradition, it called socks “annoying wintertime wear.” #Accurate. I had a friend in college who called them “foot prisons.”

The Annapolis Maritime Museum’s Oyster Roast is sold out for this weekend, but you can still organize your own sock burning. All you need is ✅ a fire pit, ✅ a pair of old socks, and ✅ a beer to toast with (optional but encouraged).

Chesapeake Oyster Week (CHOW) celebrates our fave bivalve

Oyster Recovery Partnership

It’s Restaurant Week for oyster lovers! A new initiative between the Dept. of Agriculture and the Oyster Recovery Partnership has restaurants all over the Bay showcasing oysters with CHOW, or Chesapeake Oyster Week. Between March 20 and 31, both farm-raised and wild-caught oysters will be featured at more than 60 participating restaurants.

CHOW comes on the heels of a tricky oyster season, with watermen being hit with everything from overwhelming ice to underwhelming demand. The initiative will support the industry at a critical time while stimulating oyster restoration efforts around the Bay.

In Annapolis, you might indulge in McGarvey’s oyster stew, Seasalt’s smoked oyster toast, and Carrol’s Creek Cafe’s baked oysters with sweet chili sauce (a dozen other restaurants have similar great offerings). Across the bridge, Harris’s Crab House has a Friday night oyster buffet, while up in Arnold, Donnelly’s Dockside has an all-day Monday happy hour featuring buck-a-shucks. Check out the full list, and celebrate oyster season knowing that your healthy appetite is helping create a healthy Chesapeake Bay, one shuck at a time.
