TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. The em dash (–) is apparently no longer the most reliable way to tell if AI wrote something. A new report from Barron’s says the sentence structure, “It’s not just a _____, it’s a _______” was found in 50 public company communications in 2023 (before AI was super common) and over 200 in 2025.

Btw, we’ve been using the em dash since before Sam Altman was out of diapers and don’t plan to stop. It’s not just a phenomenal piece of punctuation, it’s a lifestyle. Sorry, couldn’t help myself. . .

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Annapolis is getting a new website

  • Another new coffee trailer

  • Coast 2 Coast bike ride update

Let’s get to it.

COMMUNITY

The Coast to Coast Ride for ALS is about to commence

As you read this, a small group of Annapolitans is en route to La Push, WA. On Friday, they’ll mount bicycles and ride ‘til they reach the Starboard in Dewey Beach. Pardon the exaggeration. They will sleep and visit many dive bars along the way. So. . . why?

Because in 2023, an Annapolitan named Laura Olds was diagnosed with ALS.

  • No cure: ALS prevents your brain from sending messages to your muscles. Little by little, it takes everything from you. Eventually including your ability to breathe.

So Laura’s husband, Todd, and his friends Rex Houlihan, Scott Alyn (AKA Scooter), & John Cleary are riding bikes 4,000 miles to raise half a million bucks to find a cure and support patients.

Rider Rex – who until three weeks ago hadn’t ridden a real bicycle in 20 years (he’s been training on a Peloton) – asked Naptown Scoop to get involved way before this came to fruition. And to be 100% honest, I wasn’t sure it would actually happen. . .

But it’s happening and we’re committed now. Our goal is to raise $20k (a mere 4% of the group’s $500k goal). We’ve already raised $9k (not bad for before the wheels start spinning).

Rex and I made a bet on it so please help me not lose. Donate in honor of someone you know with ALS. Or someone you lost to the disease. As a bonus: your donation is 100% tax-deductible.

The best coffee shops in Annapolis (UPDATED)

Many moons ago, we compiled a list of the best coffee shops in Annapolis. Since then, Annapolis’ coffee game has seen some serious upgrades.

My dog’s favorite is obviously Oscar’s. She’s still hoping for a brick-and-mortar Oscar’s someday. I don’t have the heart to tell her it probably couldn’t be as dog-friendly because of health code laws. But I digress.

This might be unpopular but they aren’t all locally-owned. Sorry, corporate or not, Tatte has great vibes and good products.

We hope you enjoy our list of the best coffee shops in Annapolis. Please let us know what other lists you want to read.

🤱 Not too late: Mother’s Day is approaching fast. Don’t have a plan yet? Check out our Ultimate Mother’s Day Guide (or send it to your kids/husband 😂)

🖥️ Pixel opinions: Annapolis is redesigning its website and they want your help to make sure it’s super useful. Tell ‘em whatcha feel.

☕ Coffee on wheels: There’s another new coffee trailer in town. Although unlike the new Travelin’ Tom’s, Magothy Roasting Company’s coffee trailer is usually found in the same spot at 44 W Earleigh Heights Road in Severna Park. Check Facebook before you go to make sure they’re open!

🎸 $5k score: Get it? Score? Because this is a music story. Broadneck HS senior Ferris Kimberly just landed the Annapolis Musicians Fund for Musicians’ $5,000 Tim King Music Performance Scholarship. This fall, he’s heading to to Shenandoah University to study music production. His instrument of choice is guitar but he also plays bass, drums, and sings. Call him a one-man band.
