TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. There are about 40% more crabs in the Bay this year compared to last year. So why are bushels still busting your budget? Fuel prices for one. It’s estimated that a bushel of large males that cost ~$300 last year will run you ~$450 right now.

Btw, look for the True Blue logo to guarantee you’re eating Maryland Crab. Forward Brewing, LEO, Cantler’s, The Point, and Wild Country Seafood are all True Blue.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Anne Arundel County budget vote

  • DNR photo contest

  • World Market opening date

Let’s get to it.

The 2026 Maryland DNR Photo Contest is open 📸

Your golden-hour heron shot deserved more than 11 likes.

DNR just opened its annual photo contest — and yes, it's a statewide story, but Annapolis has some of the most talented photographers we know. The grand prize winner takes home $700, a one-year state park passport, and gets their shot on the cover of DNR’s 2027 calendar.

  • Enter by noon on August 1. $10 covers your first three photos, $3 each after that. Everything must be shot in Maryland, landscape orientation only, and no AI — the judges want pixels you earned.

Photos compete by season across subjects from birds to landscapes to "Weather and Wonder." A Fan Favorite gets crowned by Facebook vote, and new this year, DNR is scouting images for the hard cards sold with hunting and fishing licenses.

Last year's contest drew nearly 1,800 photos from 500 photographers. Enter here.

CRUNCH TIME

The county's $2.58 billion budget gets its final vote today 💰

Photo: Anne Arundel County

County Executive Steuart Pittman is term-limited, so the budget the County Council votes on today is his last.

The council meets today at 10 AM for the final vote on the fiscal 2027 budget. Don't confuse it with the regular council meeting — that's Monday, June 15.

We'll break down the budget once the votes are counted. Monday's regular session has its own full plate. On the docket:

  • A zoning veto showdown – The council takes up Pittman's line-item veto of Bill 18-26, the comprehensive rezoning of Region 5 — Odenton, Crofton, Gambrills, Piney Orchard, and Two Rivers.

  • Dispensary distance rules – Up for a final vote: a bill setting how far a licensed cannabis dispensary has to sit from homes, certain facilities, and the next dispensary over.

Also on the agenda: charter amendments that would make the County Attorney a joint hire of the executive and council, plus new rules for freestanding signs and the Resilience Authority. Monday's full agenda here.

In other news. . .

🏍️ Capital Air – Local legend Travis Pastrana will backflip a dirt bike over the UFC octagon at the White House on Saturday. Pastrana pitched UFC boss Dana White the idea at a slapping contest in Vegas last week (seriously). White gave the green light on Tuesday. He'll use a 250cc dirt bike in honor of America's 250th anniversary. And he's so stoked that he pulled out of a rally race where he's currently leading the season to make this jump.

🏗️ Promises kept – The Stanton Community Center renovation is proceeding, according to Mayor Jared Littmann. The FY27 budget adds the final $504,000 needed for design work, construction is slated to start next summer, and the city has penciled in $5.65 million to build. The center dates to 1881 and was once the county's first Black high school. Residents get a say at the 60%, 90%, and 100% design milestones.

⚽ Extra Time – Add one more to our World Cup watch guide: Waterman's Tavern in Edgewater hosts a USA vs. Paraguay party Friday — 9 PM kickoff, $3.50 domestic beers all night, $6 soccer bombs, and live music from Chris Button from 6–9 PM.

⚽ All square – The Annapolis Blues women finished in a 2-2 draw with Richmond Ivy last night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Meanwhile in Loudon County, the men fell to Loudon United’s USL 2 team 2-1. The men are back at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Wednesday. The next doubleheader is June 21.

🎓 Four More Years – The Board of Education voted 8–0 to renew Superintendent Mark Bedell's contract through 2030, then he signed it on the spot. Board members credited him with nearly eliminating staffing vacancies and fully staffing bus routes since 2022. Just one person spoke against the renewal. He will earn $372,171.60 in the first year of the contract.

🌏 Worldly Goods – World Market opens Friday, June 26 at 160 Jennifer Rd, filling the former Modell's space next to Trader Joe’s that sat empty for six years. It's the chain's first Anne Arundel County store, and it arrives mid-launch of World Market's biggest-ever gourmet food expansion — an Asian Market section stocking 700+ snacks, from Buldak ramen to collectible Kit Kats.
