Good morning, Annapolis. Carl the cow has officially been marked safe from next week’s menu at Lewnes’. The 1,400-pound steer from Kinder Farm Park sold for $25,410 (the biggest bid of the night) at last weekend’s county fair after almost 550 folks chipped in on GoFundMe to outbid the beef buyers. Carl’s headed back to the Pennsylvania farm where he was born. I love the Internet.

STEIN BY ME
Oktoberfest peaks this weekend 🥨

Photo: Forward Brewing Eastport
Unlike Cinco de Mayo and Mexico, Oktoberfest is a much bigger deal to Germans than Americans. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t trying our best. Especially our friends in West Annapolis.
🥨 West Annapolis Oktoberfest – The big one. Annapolis Street closes down for RAR Brewing's Chessie's Wharf pouring beer, bites from local restaurants and food trucks, and a long row of local vendors. In our opinion, the only thing that would make this better is a dachshund dash like D.C. does. Free to enter. Sunday, 11 AM to 4 PM.
🍺 Forward Brewing – Forward’s no German restaurant. But they make a mean Märzen-style lager and sweet steins every year. For the first time, this year’s steins are ceramic (and yes, they’re available for purchase). There will also be brats and kraut from New Roots Farm. 418 Fourth Street. Saturday 11 AM to 9:30 PM, Sunday 11 AM to 8 PM.
🎺 Garten – Grown-up Oktoberfest launched last weekend. This Saturday’s for the kids. There will be alpine horn demos and a root beer stein-holding contest at noon. And of course, the Oktoberfest special menu is still in effect (until October 4). Saturday, 11 AM to 3 PM.
🪗 Old Stein Inn – Old Stein is the county’s original German restaurant, opened in 1983 by German immigrants Karl & Ursula Selinger. These days, Karl and Ursula’s son Mike runs the show, but it’s no less authentic. The Oktoberfest menu is in full effect and there’s an accordion in the biergarten Sunday from 2–5 PM.
As always, friends, please drink responsibly. And always have a designated driver.

HORN OF PLENTY
Annapolis Jazz & Roots returns November 6–15 🎷
Eastport's jazz festival turns five this year, and it's still one of the best deals in town. Nine concerts and lectures over two weekends, eight venues, and most of it’s free or damn close.
This year’s theme is "New World Music: Centuries of Sound," which walks the music from Indigenous drumming through colonial fiddle tunes to modern jazz.
Opening night belongs to trumpeter Muneer Nasser at St. Luke's Episcopal in Eastport in honor of three giants born in 1926: John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Randy Weston. Friday, November 6 at 7 PM.
Two more of note:
🥁 Perkutao – An Afro-Peruvian band out of Lima plays Peerless Rens Club, the historic Black social club. If you’ve never been to Peerless Rens, you’re missing out. Two shows, 4 and 6 PM, Saturday, November 7.
🪶 Uhwachi-Reh – The closer. Louis Campbell of the Lumbee tribe leads traditional Indigenous dance in ceremonial regalia, with live drumming and singing. Pip Moyer Rec Center, Sunday, November 15 at 2 PM.
Drummer Makaya McCraven headlines Maryland Hall on November 8, the Naval Academy Band pays tribute to Miles Davis on November 13, and D.C. vocalist Akua Allrich sings Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba at the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum on November 14.
Reservations are strongly advised for everything, tickets run through instantseats.com (McCraven's go through Maryland Hall), and all but two venues have free parking on site.
