TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. A team of 100 Italian chefs gathered in London to cook and assemble a record-breaking tiramisu measuring 1,445 feet long. That's roughly five football fields of tiramisu. I can't decide if this is an impressive feat of culinary engineering or if somewhere a nonna is shaking her head in complete disappointment.
In today’s Naptown Scoop:
USNA’s new commandant
AACPS Teacher of the Year
We’re getting excited about May Day
Let’s get to it.

EDUCATION
Former accountant wins AACPS Teacher of the Year
Joe Bigsby quit accounting because he was bored of sitting in a chair all day. Friday night, he stood on a stage as Anne Arundel County’s 2026 Teacher of the Year.
The Magothy River Middle School STEM teacher was chosen from 88 nominees and six finalists at the 40th annual Excellence in Education Awards. Over 700 people packed into the Live! Event Center at Arundel Mills to celebrate Joe’s win.
Almost 40 years: Joe’s not the first Magothy River Middle teacher to earn the honor. A beloved science teacher named Penny Vahsen earned one of the earliest Teacher of the Year honors in 1988.
Bigsby’s taught at Magothy River since 2018, leading classes in technology, engineering, and computer sciences. He’s also led several clubs; currently he’s the coach of the robotics team and sponsor of the strategy board game club.
Up next: Bigsby will represent Anne Arundel County in Maryland’s Teacher of the Year competition. Go Joe!

LOCAL TRADITIONS
Where to see flowers like these tomorrow
If the Blue Angels weren’t also in May, tomorrow might just be the best day of the month. That’s because it’s May Day. And while it’s celebrated many ways around the world, ours is the best and no, we’re not biased.
🍦The scoop: For the uninitiated, both residents and businesses create (or buy, no judgement) beautiful flower displays. Residents put theirs in a traditional basket; businesses (and kids) can have a little more fun choosing their vessels.
It’s a bit late to plan a basket but it’s not too late to plan a walk. And although we desperately want the warm weather back, we’re glad it won’t be tomorrow. The high will be in the low sixties which is not great because I already changed my closet over to summer but is great because in past years (looking at you 2024), many flowers wilted before we got good pics.
We’re putting the judges map below but if you want to know everything or you’re going to try a last minute basket (we’re rooting for you), we put together a comprehensive guide.
P.S. Judging starts at 10 AM so that’s the best time to start your walk for maximum bloomage.

USNA announces new commandant
The Naval Academy’s new commandant defuses bombs for a living. So being responsible for 4,400 students should be a walk in the park, right?
Capt. Clinton A. Cornell, USNA Class of 2001, is currently commander of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group ONE in San Diego. And he was just revealed as the 92nd commandant of midshipmen. He’ll officially take the role this June.
Loss of faith: Capt. Gilbert Clark Jr. was removed from the role of commandant in November for “a loss of confidence in his ability to lead.” His LinkedIn now shows him working at Naval Education and Training Command in Sarasota, FL.
Captain Cornell’s resume sounds like Tom Clancy wrote it. In addition to EOD, he has qualifications like special operations officer, deep sea diving officer, and naval parachutist. He also has a bronze star (awarded for heroic service in combat).
What’s a dant? The commandant is to the Naval Academy as the dean of students is to a regular college. They are responsible for the day-to-day military training, conduct, and professional development of all 4,400 midshipmen. The “dant”, as they’re sometimes known, is second in command to the Superintendent.
Captain Austin “AJ” Jackson has served as commandant since Captain Clark’s departure.

In other news. . .
🏍️ Hometown Hero: Travis Pastrana's Nitro Circus is coming back to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 23 — its first Annapolis stop since 2017, when 22,000 fans set the tour's North American attendance record. The Davidsonville native's 2026 show promises 100+ stunts, including a 75-foot backflip through a 35-foot wall of fire. It’s kinda like what we imagine would happen if the Savannah Bananas rode dirt bikes. Get tickets.
🚲 Pedal pushers: Annapolis' 29th Annual Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 15. If you have the time, join the party at City Dock from 7–9 AM for a t-shirt, bike safety checks, refreshments, and a short program at 8 AM. Meet at the Poplar Trail near the Annapolis Police Station at 7:15 AM to ride with a posse to City Dock. Register here (for Bike to Work Day in general, not the thing at City Dock).
🏈 Steel city reunion: Two days after the Steelers drafted Navy slotback Eli Heidenreich in the seventh round, they invited his fellow Pittsburgh native and teammate, running back Alex Tecza, to rookie minicamp. Minicamp is May 8–10.
🏈 More locals drafted: The Green Bay Packers traded up to grab Severna Park's own Trey Smack with the final pick of the sixth round — the only kicker taken in the entire NFL draft. The 2021 Severna Park High grad made 82.8% of his field goals at Florida, including a school-record 10 from 50+ yards. "Surreal feeling," he said. ($)
