TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s independence day. Today is. On September 16, 1810, a priest named Miguel Hidalgo rang his church bell in the town of Dolores and called on his parishioners to revolt against Spanish rule. 216 years later, the Mexican president still rings the exact same bell to celebrate.

EARN YOUR STRIPES
Navy’s next special uniform is 100 years old. Kinda.
The Mids just unveiled a throwback-inspired jersey for the Notre Dame game. It’s a remake of the “chevron stripe” look worn by Navy’s only national championship team. There are nine stripes (four on the front, five on the back), one for every win in 1926.
Everything comes straight from the history books. “Navy Blue and Gold” is printed inside the collar (the alma mater was first performed in its current form that April), the back-neck tag copies the Class of 1926 pin (eagle and trident included), and the numbers borrow the pin’s typography.
That 1926 team went 9–0–1 in Bill Ingram’s first season as head coach, beat Michigan 10–0 in front of 80,000 at Baltimore’s Municipal Stadium, and tied Army 21–21 before a crowd of 110,000 at Soldier Field. At the end of the year, Navy was one of four national champions.
🤨 Wait what? College football has a confusing national championship history. As recently as 2003, there were multiple national champions because they were chosen by polls and formulas rather than playoffs.
Notre Dame’s got a cameo in the season that shows how different things were, too. Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne skipped his own team’s game against Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) to attend Army-Navy. He found out via telegram that his Fighting Irish lost 19–0. Ouch.
Kickoff is noon on Saturday, October 31 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, on ABC or ESPN.

🐾 Dog of the Week: Kayla
Meet Kayla, a three-year-old boxer mix who has been on the SPCA of Anne Arundel County’s list since December 6. She has spent the last two months of that in a foster home, and the reviews are glowing.
“Kayla is truly the sweetest girl and, without a doubt, one of the easiest fosters we have ever had,” her foster family wrote. Sit anywhere near her and there’s a 95% chance she climbs into your lap. Get up to cook or shower and she’ll follow for a minute, then settle back down until you’re done.
She knows sit, paw, and lay down, comes when you call her, comes faster when you say the word treat, and waits for permission before she eats. She’s house-trained, crate-trained, and walks on a loose leash. In other words: she’s a dream dog.
The fine print: Kayla wants to be the only pet in the house, and no small kids. She will bark at strangers but loves them once she’s introduced. Her preferred way of saying she likes you is gentle nibbling called corn-cobbing.
Nine months is a long time to wait for a lap to sit in. Go meet Kayla!

Is 1% a year worth it for a wealth manager? Here’s an honest answer.
Standard wealth management fees average around 1% annually—about $6,000 on a $600,000 portfolio. So, what are you paying for?
While advisors manage investments, their greatest value often lies elsewhere:
Behavioral Guidance: Preventing panic-selling during market crashes or chasing hype, keeping your long-term plan intact.
Strategic Coordination: Aligning IRAs, Social Security, taxes, and estate plans. Techniques like Roth conversions and smart withdrawal sequencing can save more over a lifetime than the fee itself.
Missed opportunities can prove far more costly than the fee.
Scarborough Capital Management has earned the trust of Annapolis families for over 35 years.

HULL YEAH
What we’re looking forward to in October 🎃
I have long said October is the best month of the year in Annapolis. Here’s my argument:
Boat Shows
Renn Fest
Navy football
Cool (but not cold) in the morning, warm (but not too hot) in the day, cool again in the evening
Those are the big events, but October’s got a lot more to offer. Here’s everything we’re looking forward to.
P.S. If we had to caption the above photo it’d 100% be “Guys being dudes.”

🏛️ Unlocked and Loaded – Ten of the 11 people who spoke at Monday’s City Council meeting came to push back on Zoning Unlocked, the city’s plan to trim 32 zoning districts down to 25. Ward 1 residents and Historic Annapolis want downtown left out of it until the short-term rental rules are settled. The council absorbed the report without a vote. Elsewhere, the council introduced a resolution to raise the maximum fine for an unlicensed short-term rental to $5k (up from $1k).
🎒 Back to the Board – Crofton’s fight over school redistricting is not over. Anne Arundel Circuit Judge Mark Crooks on Monday ordered One Crofton’s case back to the state Board of Education, which dismissed it in February over who had standing to sue. At issue is the county board’s 5–3 vote to move about 750 students, including Nantucket Elementary families shifted out of the Crofton cluster. More ($)
