THE DIGEST

It's back: free downtown holiday parking 🚗

Free is our favorite price to pay for pretty much anything. And when you’re already dropping plenty of money on holiday gifts, it doesn’t hurt to skip paying for parking. So we always appreciate the fact that parking is free for up to 2 hours downtown between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

Here’s how it works: You just need to download the ParkMobile app, and use it to get 2 hours free at any metered or kiosk space downtown. (You can then extend it for 2 more hours at a paid rate.) You can also park at the Mills-Hillman Garage (which was recently renamed) and get your first hour free (with the option to pay for extra time). No smartphone? Call 877-727-5758 when you park.

New bike projects coming soon 🚲

Annapolis is raising the kickstand on a few bike projects, some of which have been in the works for a while now. Based on the Bicycle Master Plan, a long-range vision created back in 2011, the city has announced new projects that will make it safer and easier to get around via bicycle:

🚴‍♂️ Bike lanes on Compromise Street between Newman Street and Eastport
🚴 A connection at McGuckian Street and Russell Street that will link numerous trails and recreational areas
🚴‍♀️ A Hilltop Lane connector between Boxwood Road and Forest Drive
🚴 New signs on major bike trails

These are the latest efforts the city is taking to make it easier to get around Annapolis by bike. Read the full master plan.

NAPTOWN SCOOP LOCAL BUSINESS IS POWERED BY. . .

Brad Kappel named Top 100 Agents worldwide 🏠

Doing anything four times in a row is a pretty big deal, but how about being named one of the top 100 in your field for four consecutive years? That’s why we’re pretty excited for local realtor and Scoop friend Brad Kappel, who was named one of the Top 100 Agents and Teams Worldwide by Sotheby’s International Realty. He and his team have had one of the best years across Sotheby’s 26K advisers in 1,100 offices across 84 countries. Specifically, the Brad Kappel Team has done $320 million in sales year-to-date for 2025.

Train displays at Homestead Gardens 🚂

Nothing makes you feel quite like a little kid on Christmas morning like an elaborate model train display — especially when the trains weave their way through a winter wonderland. That’s why it’s always so exciting when Homestead Gardens opens up its train displays every holiday season. Put together by longtime “conductor” Reggie Pratt, these train displays are the true stuff of Christmas memories. Choo-choo-choose either the Severna Park location or Davidsonville location (or stop by both) now through New Year’s Eve. See hours.

Capital Teas brew-tiful new location 🫖

Capital Teas has steeped — uh, stepped — back into the Annapolis Mall after being gone for a few years. You might remember the specialty tea shop had a location in the mall that closed back in 2018. The previous mall location folded into the brand’s flagship location on Main Street downtown. Now that the downtown location has closed, they’re back at the Annapolis Mall. Stock up on your favorite teas ahead of cozy season near Lululemon and Lush. See the directory map.

Unveiling the Lights Parade poster 🎄

Putting the “tide” in “yuletide” every year is the Eastport Yacht Club’s Lights Parade, and it has an official promo poster you’re going to start seeing all over town. Local artist Eva Barsin designed the “Holiday Reflection in Quiet Motion” illustration that won the poster contest, depicting illuminated sailboats on the waters of Ego Alley with the unmistakable Annapolis cityscape in the background. Eastport Yacht Club holds the poster design contest in conjunction with Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating, and they unveiled the poster at an artist reception in late October. Eva received the grand prize and was honored alongside Mary LaCasse, whose “Knot Your Average Parade” was named Fan Favorite.

🗓️ Mark your calendar: The Eastport Lights Parade is set for December 13, 6–8 PM in the Annapolis harbor.

SPORTS

The Midshipmen pulled off a thrilling upset against #24 South Florida on Saturday to take sole ownership of the top American Conference spot. Senior WR Eli Heidenreich became the program’s all-time receiving yards leader with 146 yards. Junior backup QB Braxton Woodson replaced Blake Horvath in the fourth quarter and ran for over 100 yards and 2 TDs.

Even though the Mids led 100% of the game, it still came down to the final minutes. Navy heads to Memphis on Thanksgiving night for their final conference game. Win and they’re in a strong position to be #1 seed in the conference championship. Lose and they might be out.

Navy soccer coach won’t return 🥅

Navy athletics announced last week that men’s soccer coach Tim O’Donohue won’t return next year. Navy athletics won’t be renewing O’Donohue’s contract after 3 straight losing seasons. It’s the first varsity coaching change by first-year AD Michael Kelly. OD led the team for 10 seasons. A nationwide search is underway with associate head coach Mark Risbridger filling the role in the interim. ($)

3 for 3 for Severna Park girls soccer ⚽️

When the Severna Park girls soccer team beat Oakdale 4-3 in double overtime this weekend (shoutout to senior Hope Wallace who made the winning goal practically by accident), it brought the team their third state title in three years. In that time, the team has won 52 games, scored 191 goals, and won three consecutive county, region, and (now) state championships. That’s the most success the team has seen in the program’s history — and based on the contributions of the underclassmen on the team in Saturday’s state final, they may be looking forward to more great seasons ahead.
