TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Happy Maryland Day to all who celebrate. Some fun dates for you – the first European settlers arrived in Maryland today in 1634. Marylanders began observing Maryland Day in 1903, but it didn’t become a legal state holiday until 1916.

And in 1991, Phillip Noyce shot scenes for Patriot Games in Annapolis, mostly at the Naval Academy. Which has nothing to do with Maryland Day but we still think it’s awesome.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Scoop’s Film Festival picks

  • Too many dogs at the shelter

  • AACPS national merit scholar finalists

Let’s get to it.

Let’s try this again: Dog-friendly restaurants in Annapolis

My bad. I changed a link after the email was scheduled yesterday and broke everything. Over 1,000 of you tried to read our list of dog-friendly restaurants and got hit with a good old 404 error. Sorry about that.

So let’s try this again. Here’s our list of dog-friendly restaurants in town.

P.S. Did we miss your favorite? Reply to this email and let us know!

Dog of the Week: Meet Cadbury Mini Egg 🐾

We typically feature one of our favorite four-legged friends from the SPCA as our Dog of the Week, but we’re doing something a little different today. A couple of weeks ago, Anne Arundel County Animal Services hit an all-time low for adoptions. Add on the fact that they’re receiving way more dogs than usual and you’ve got quite a pickle.

So, we want to introduce you to Cadbury Mini Egg — he’s a 9-month-old pit bull, and he’s got the perfect name for a new addition to your family around the Easter season. Plus, look at the playful joy on his face.

  • Cadbury is technically still a puppy at 9 months. Animal Services says they have 6 dogs under a year old. That means these puppies have been spending their formative years growing up in a stressful kennel when they deserve a loving home.

  • Other puppies at Animal Service include Tiger, the 10-month-old German Shepherd; Nylah, the 6-month-old black-mouth cur; and Oatmilk, the 9-month-old lab retriever. See the full list of dogs.

  • Can’t adopt or foster? Spreading the word by simply sharing the Facebook post always helps.

The Annapolis Film Festival kicks off tomorrow night

Last Call in the North

We’ve been anxiously waiting for this moment ever since the banners started showing up on West Street. The Annapolis Film Festival opens Thursday night with a 7:15 PM showing of Power Ballad, a Paul Rudd - Nick Jonas feature that highlights the relationship between a past-his-prime wedding singer and a fading boy bander. And while we’re certain Power Ballad will be making waves outside of Annapolis, many other films are sure to be commended.

Here’s what our team is yapping about in the Scoop Slack.

Dylan: Ahoy! is a short, but the premise sure has my undivided attention. Just 14 minutes long, the film depicts a young boy raised at sea centuries after an environmental collapse. When he discovers a map floating in the water, a journey begins to a mythical place once known as "land.” 2:30 PM Sunday @ Maryland Hall.

Lauren: I might not be able to have chili nachos anytime soon, but the dark comedy Chili Finger caught my eye, starring Judy Greer, Sean Astin, and John Goodman. Greer’s character finds something bigger than a kidney bean in her chili and blackmails a beloved fast-food chain for $100,000 to stay quiet. 9:30 PM Friday @ Maryland Hall or 9:15 PM Saturday @ St. John’s College.

Duffy: Loving Karma is the follow up to Tashi and the Monk, a 2014 Emmy-winning documentary about a Tibetan community for children who have endured abandonment, neglect, and trauma. The love and happiness will have your eyes watering uncontrollably. 12:30 PM Friday @ Asbury United Methodist Church.

Ryan: Last Call in the North. I’m a sucker for documentaries about things I’d never consider otherwise. Plus I love when mountains meet water. It’s one of the most beautiful geographies on Earth. 10 AM Friday & Saturday @ Maryland Hall.

  • Admit one: Individual tickets are around $20 each (although there’s a 6-pack for $100). Passes (unlimited films and more perks) start at $200.
