TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. A city council candidate in Kelowna, British Columbia is going viral for his yard signs. They feature his face alongside the words “Under 60!” and his slogan: “I Barely Want To Do This.” His website says he doesn’t enjoy politics and isn’t qualified. And people say there’s no honesty left in politics.
In today’s Naptown Scoop:
New memorial on the Yard
Early voting starts today
Navy Homecoming road closures
Let’s get to it.

NEW HORIZONS
Holly Beach Farm opens to hikers and birders 🌊

Photo: Maryland DNR
Holly Beach Farm has some of the best Bay Bridge views in the county, and most of us have never seen them. That changes November 6.
Starting that day, the state will take reservations for hiking and birding on the 293-acre peninsula. Neighbors have always been concerned about the impact of a waterfront park (see: nearby Sandy Point), so DNR only plans to admit about 20 people a day right now.
🗺️ Where the heck is Holly Beach Farm? It sits next to Sandy Point State Park. And it has woods, open fields, a 9-acre freshwater pond, and about five miles of shoreline on the Chesapeake Bay and Whitehall Bay.
The land was a private estate for more than a century. New Orleans businessman Sylvester Labrot started piecing it together from old farms in the early 1900s. His son turned it into a successful horse breeding operation. The Conservation Fund acquired it from the family in 2001 and gave it to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, who gave it to the state in 2024.
🚤 What’s next: A new 450-foot pier (deep enough for ferries and educational boats) is in the works. And the old farmhouse is getting fixed up as a meeting space with a supposedly incredible Bay Bridge view.
At the end of the day, it’s all about expanding public water access. The vast majority of Chesapeake Bay shoreline (some estimates are as high as 90%) is privately owned, and the state and waterfront counties are making a huge push to expand public access.

STANDING WATCH
New memorial goes up on the Yard ⚓

Photo: Dony Mac Manus
Crews installed a new Global War on Terrorism memorial yesterday. Unlike my bank account, it has six figures, each representing a different part of the Navy.
The sculptor is Dony Mac Manus, a Dublin-born artist who works out of Falls Church, VA. Most of his work is sacred art. For example, he has a bust of Pope Benedict XVI in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and a statue of St. Oliver Plunkett in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Ireland.
This one is personal for him. While he didn’t attend the Naval Academy, Mac Manus spent two years at art school in Tribeca. On September 11, 2001, he and a friend had planned to go to 8 AM Mass at St. Peter’s Church, a few blocks from the World Trade Center. They both skipped it without telling each other.
If you’d like to check it out, it’s located just outside the Melville Entrance of Alumni Hall (on the corner closest to Worden Field).

🗳️ Polls Are Open – Early voting starts today and runs through Thursday, October 29, weekends included. Centers are open 7 AM to 8 PM, and you can use any of the county’s 10, no matter where you usually vote. The two in Annapolis are the Pip Moyer Rec Center and the Broadneck Library. Not registered? You can register on the spot. Bring your license or an official document with your address on it. Here’s the full list of locations.
🏈 Homecoming Kings – Navy hosts North Texas for Homecoming Saturday at 3:30 PM. The Mids are 2–4, but they’ve won eight straight at home and their last four Homecoming games, including one against North Texas in 2023. Before kickoff, the Brigade marches from the Yard to the stadium starting at 2:20 PM. Expect rolling road closures and parking restrictions from about 11 AM until they pass. Tickets are still available from $34.50.
⚖️ Guilty Again – A federal jury convicted Annapolis businessman Patrick Britton-Harr of Medicare fraud. His company billed Medicare $18.7 million for respiratory tests nursing home residents didn’t need during covid and collected more than $7.2 million. Prosecutors say he used the money for a Porsche 911 and the $25k monthly mortgage payments on a waterfront mansion in Pendennis Mount. It’s his second conviction this year. In June, a jury found he misused $15 million from members of his private jet club, AeroVanti.
🚁 Semper Loud – If you hear a lot of rumbling around the Severn today, it’s just the Marines. The Naval Academy is hosting a Marine Air-Ground Task Force display at Hospital Point to show midshipmen the Marine Corps’ equipment. Naval Support Activity Annapolis says neighbors may notice more military activity and noise than usual. But they didn’t say when.
🦀 Crab Six-Pack – Lures Bar & Grille in Crownsville is throwing Crabtoberfest Friday through Sunday. Like its famous Grilled Cheese Fest, it’s built on sixes: six chef-made crab dishes paired with six beers from Crooked Crab Brewing. Lures hasn’t posted the dishes yet, so you’ll just have to go and see for yourself.
