TRUCK STOP
County’s 239-page zoning rewrite stalls over food trucks 🌮
The County Council sat down at 6 PM Monday to finish rewriting the county zoning code. Four and a half hours later, the bill got pushed to October 5 with the food trucks still idling.
Bill 61-26 is the first comprehensive update since 2005. But one page in particular filled the room and social media this week. It put some serious limitations on when, where, and how often food trucks could operate and the roving chefs weren’t happy.
“It looks like putting us out of business and taking food out of my daughter’s mouth,” said Brad Oswald, who runs the Thai truck Tiki’s Tuk Tuk with his wife, Tiki. “Our truck is our restaurant.”
County Executive Steuart Pittman sent a letter calling the bill housekeeping and said food trucks had become a policy issue. He was in favor of removing them entirely. But truck owners huddled in the hallway before the meeting and decided they would rather stay in the bill and fix the language in two weeks. The council ground through more than 30 other amendments and exempted farms from a zoning certificate almost none of them had anyway.
🗳️ The rest of the night: Councilman Nathan Volke’s bill opening Community Benefit grants to every council district passed 4–3. His emergency bill keeping cannabis dispensaries 500 feet from schools and parks died 3–4, and so did his bill cutting the required density for R5 workforce housing.

Dog of the week: Meet Sansa 🐕
Seven months. That’s how long this five-year-old Rottweiler has watched other dogs leave the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.
The volunteers are obsessed with her. One wrote that she leans into you for attention and pats. Another was floored by her manners on a leash. “She gets excited when you first leash her up but then settles into the walk quickly.” Sansa is medium energy, happy to nap after a short lap, and she knows her name. The shelter wants an adopter with Rottweiler experience, which is part of why she’s still here.
One thing worth knowing before you go, because the order trips people up. You apply first, online or in person, and an adoption committee reads it – sometimes against several other applications for the same dog. You meet the dog after that, not before. Some dogs also require a home check. Start to finish it usually runs two to seven days, though the SPCA says reviews are behind right now.
Dog adoption fees start at $160 and cover a spay or neuter, shots, a microchip, and heartworm and tick-borne disease testing. The shelter is at 1815 Bay Ridge Avenue and you can walk the dog room Tuesday through Sunday.

THE BOTTOM LINE
60,000 diapers a month 👶
Let me hit you with a few sobering facts. Nearly 50% of U.S. families with young children struggle to afford diapers. 25% of those families miss an average of 5 workdays per month because they can’t leave enough diapers with a provider for all-day childcare. And unlike rent and food, there’s no federal assistance for diapers.
And this isn’t a somewhere else problem. It’s right here in Anne Arundel County. I know that because the Walk the Walk Foundation gives away 60,000 diapers every month to Anne Arundel families. Well, not directly. . .
Walk the Walk collects diapers (and buys them at a special bulk discount). They’re then repackaged into bundles of 25 and once a month, 25 local diaper pantries pick them up and distribute them to over 1,000 kids. The foundation also fills backpacks for AACPS elementary schoolers and has sponsored gifts for over 10,000 kids.
But since last week was National Diaper Need Awareness Week, we wanted to highlight their diaper work today. Thank you, Walk the Walk Foundation, for over 20 years of serving our county!

In other news. . .
🐷 Pig Out – Looking for something unique to do this week? Betcha didn’t know the Ugly Pig runs after-hours workshops. Tonight’s game night (not that kind 🎲). They’re cooking duck, rabbit, and elk. And tomorrow it’s all about fish. Both workshops are $90 and kitchen space is limited. Call 410-571-3060 or stop in (1841 St Margarets Road) to register.
🌿 Dig In – Historic London Town and Gardens holds its annual fall plant sale this weekend, and everything on the tables is hardy in zone 7 and does fine in our clay. Expect the magnolias, camellias, and azaleas the gardens are known for, plus bagels and coffee (not for planting). Every dollar goes to the upkeep of more than 10 acres of woodland and ornamental garden. Saturday and Sunday, 9 AM to 2 PM at 839 Londontown Road in Edgewater.
🎃 Straw Poll – The Inner West Street Association is taking entries for the fifth annual Annapolis Scarecrow Stroll. Build one, pay $25, and it goes up on West Street, Main Street, or Maryland Avenue. Then everyone votes to determine winners in seven categories including Kids Giggle, Most Scary, and Quite the Character. Applications close October 18 and the scarecrows go up October 24. P.S. This is for families and businesses. It’s like May Day for the fall!
