Brush fire closes Solomons Island Rd 🔥

Did you lose power Wednesday night or Thursday morning? If you live near the Annapolis Harbor Center, it’s likely because of a brush fire caused by downed power lines. The fire, which happened near the intersection of Solomons Island Rd. (Rt. 2) and Annapolis Harbor Center Drive, started around 2 AM. Fire crews closed both roadways to put out the fire, though the roads were back open by 5 AM. BGE still had about 200 customers without power by 7 AM Thursday morning. A power outage or road closure might be inconvenient, but the good news: Everyone is safe. ($)

THE DIGEST

Biggest stories this week :

🗳️ Annapolis election results: Following Tuesday’s election for city offices, we announced Jared Littmann as mayor-elect with a 70% lead that has increased to 73% as more ballots are counted. Worth noting: Although Tom Krieck led on Wednesday morning for Ward 1 on the City Council, Harry Huntley has pulled ahead to be 1’s alderman-elect.

🌾 Only 5 Wildberry markets remain: Wildberry field markets have been great while they’ve been a thing, but now our favorite source for local, handmade gifts is shuttering its weekly markets to become a brewery. This weekend starts the 5-week countdown to their last field market, so don’t miss out.

🚧 City Dock Project breaks ground: After years of planning, a flood mitigation project at City Dock finally broke ground this week. The project is designed to protect the downtown spot from floodwaters of up to 8.77 feet through 2060.

Board of Ed. reconsiders redistricting

After two lengthy meetings where more than 150 parents and students voiced their redistricting concerns to the Board of Education, AACPS announced they’ve eliminated five of the six proposals put forward by Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell and the board members. The single plan will move forward to public comment beginning next week. Read the updated plan.

A decoy pup gets named 🐾

Alright, everybody, meet Nugget! This cute little ankle-biter will now grace the docks at Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, keeping birds (and tourist boaters) from excessive trespassing. Nugget is the pup of proud parents Drew and Debby, who were also considering names Dingo, David, Dixon, and more. But the name Nugget was chosen with more than 50% of the votes, and seeing this cute picture, we can see why.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Foodie Friday: Best Pretzels 🥨

Don’t get it twisted. While there’s no official Pretzel Season — if there were, fall would claim it. You’ll find us savoring (fine, drooling over) pretzels at these spots.

🧀 Garten | 849 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd, Severna Park | This modern beer and wine garden with European influences has the most delightful soft pretzels served with their famous Garten mustard. Live a little and add beer cheese, pickle dip, or spinach sauerkraut.

🧈 PA Dutch Farmers Market | 2472 Solomons Island Rd, Annapolis | No Harbor Center visit is complete without buttery pure pretzel bliss. Get extra napkins — we’re not kidding about the butter. Open Thursday and Friday (8:30 AM–6 PM) and Saturday (8 AM—3 PM).

🦀 Davis’ Pub | 400 Chester Ave, Annapolis | There’s a reason the crab pretzel is front and center on their website. It’s a toasted jumbo soft pretzel roll piled with Davis’ Back Creek crab dip and melted cheddar.

New store alert: Call Your Mother Deli 🥪

We have to give a lot of credit to the F45 clients: Keeping your gains when there’s a Crumbl cooking store directly next door has got to be a challenge. And it’s going to get even more difficult because Call Your Mother Deli is moving into the same strip of Annapolis Harbor Center. Call Your Mother’s menu covers it all, from the classic everything-and-smear to a meatball bagel. They also have great vegan and gluten-free options, for all of us who want to pretend like we’re showing restraint. Opening date is November 11, and they’re open 6:30 AM–3 PM daily.

New era for Navy men’s basketball 🏀⚓️

We’ve talked a ton about Navy football lately (btw, Go Navy, Beat Notre Dame tomorrow!). Now it’s basketball’s turn to have the floor. Jon Perry, longtime associate coach, began his first season as Navy men’s basketball head coach this week.

Perry inherited a veteran lineup — all five starters returned from last season’s Patriot League runner-up team, earning Navy the preseason favorite spot. Senior point guard Austin Benigni, the league’s reigning scoring leader and preseason Player of the Year, leads the charge alongside Jordan Pennick, Aiden Kehoe, Donovan Draper, and Jinwoo Kim. Perry’s focus: turning experience into a championship run.

The Mids opened with a 76-55 win at Presbyterian. Now comes a tough schedule — including North Carolina, Penn State, and defending Ivy League champ Yale tonight at 8:30 PM in Alumni Hall. ($)

Men's Basketball (1-0)
