NAPTOWN SCOOP LOCAL BUSINESS IS POWERED BY. . .
Reader Recs: Favorite places to holiday shop 🎁
It’s Lauren, your local elf-in-chief. I’m working on my fourth Annapolis Holiday Gift Guide, and I want to make it the best one yet. Sure, we’ll feature our tried-and-true local favorites (you know who you are 😉), but I don’t want to miss a single hidden gem. I’m on the hunt for fresh finds, too. Help me leave no shelf unbrowsed and no gift unwrapped.
📋While you’re making your list (and checking it twice), browse last year’s guide for inspiration!
Chesapeake Chapters: Old Fox Books local recs
The first week of November is always the hard launch of Cozy Season. To celebrate, we’re lighting a candle, getting a cup of tea, and curling up with a good book. 🕯️☕️📖 For recommendations on what to read this month, we asked our friends at Old Fox Books for local authors who know how to really turn a tale.
📚 Author Erika Robuck has a knack for finding hidden characters who managed to change history, weaving tales of daring adventure lost to the sands of time. Fans of Kristin Hannah will love her.
📚 If you’re interested in the Annapolis of old, check out the historical novel Chesapeake Bound by Thomas Guay, an evocatively written tale of adventure during a trans-Atlantic crossing in 1763. Nonfiction fiends will appreciate Annapolitan David Gendell, who has done his research with The Last Days of the Schooner America, telling the story of a sailing champion.
📚 Sujata Massey is an award-winning local author by way of Silver Spring, and her historical mysteries set in India are timeless and compelling. If you’re looking for thrillers closer to home, the 12 books in Baltimorean Laura Lippman’s Tess Monaghan series will keep you company all winter long.
📚 The U.S. Naval Academy was once home to Barbara Kingsolver, who was born on the Yard while her father was a doctor in the Navy. And Robert Heinlein, who (along with Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clark) is considered one of the three Fathers of American Science Fiction, received his B.A. in engineering in Annapolis.
So grab a snuggly blanket and get reading! If you’re looking to connect with other bibliophiles in one of the coolest bookstores in the country, check out Old Fox’s many book clubs meeting throughout the month.
Grand Opening: Bubbakoo's Burritos 🌯
Holy guacamole — Bubbakoo’s Burritos’ grand opening is November 6 at 145 Mitchells Chance Rd, Edgewater. To celebrate, the first 50 guests score a FREE burrito (beef, chicken, veggie, or pork)!
Since 2008, Bubbakoo’s has built a loyal following for its bold, fresh Mexican-fusion flavors — think tacos, quesadillas, taco salads, and the legendary Chiwawa (a cheesy rice ball packed with flavor). Fans swear it’s better than Chipotle . . . guess you’ll have to taste and decide! Just know our hearts (and tortillas) are full.

SPORTS
Private school soccer champs ⚽️
One year after going winless, Key School girls soccer captured the IAAM C Conference title with a 1–0 win over Beth Tfiloh. Coach Steve Horrigan’s mantra — pride, passion, resilience, integrity, discipline, and empathy — guided a young team built on trust, including his daughter and senior goalkeeper Leilah Horrigan. Sophomore Kendall McMillan scored the lone goal, sealing a storybook finish for a program that transformed adversity into championship glory.
Severn girls soccer pulled off a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Mount de Sales to claim the IAAM B title, their first since 2021. Down 2-0 early, seniors and underclassmen rallied, with Alaina Subong scoring the game-winner just like she’d dreamed the night before. Walt Disney’s right: "If you can dream it, you can do it.” Lucy Ambro and Eliza Grace Beard notched the other two goals. Coach Denison Cabral praised the team’s resilience and comeback mentality. ($)
