TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. The web debuted to the public 35 years ago. On August 6, 1991, Tim Berners-Lee posted a summary of his World Wide Web project to a message board: no photos, no ads, no gifs, just plain text explaining how links work. Look what we’ve done with it.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Storm Bros. challenges City Dock Project

  • Two free hours in the city garages

  • City tackles the downtown zoning rumors

Let’s get to it.

MORE FLOODING WOES

Storm Bros. challenges City Dock Project

The City Dock Project has a very clear goal: Protect downtown and, in particular, its business community from flooding. But one local business owner says the construction process is doing more harm than good.

Sveinn Storm, owner of Storm Bros. Ice Cream Factory, has spent the last year photographing the more significant flooding events and their negative impact on his business. In particular, Storm has been watching the drain in front of his door and the backup, both sediment and water, that has accumulated with rain events both mediocre and significant. Storm has called into question both the efficacy of the pumps used to move water and the filters that Whiting Turner has placed in the storm drains to collect construction debris.

City Dock sits just 3 feet above sea level, which places all equipment used to alleviate flooding below the water table. Installed in 2019, the pumps are designed to push 10,000 gallons of water per hour; a half-inch of rainfall puts 40,000 gallons of water against that technology. With significant flooding events increasing threefold since 2010, these pumps are the biggest protection against damage, and the pumps being installed with the project are set to push 10,000 gallons per minute. The rainstorm that hit downtown Annapolis yesterday (Wednesday) morning at roughly 5 AM brought in .36 inches of rainfall.

Alderman for Annapolis’ Ward One Harry Huntley shared: “The tides keep getting higher, and that’s exactly why we need to Get City Dock Done as fast as possible.”

The mayor’s office and the Maryland Department of Environment are addressing the issue, with a drain and filter inspection happening yesterday to address Storm’s findings. If you want to get involved personally, our best call to action is to eat an ice cream cone.

MEDAL HAUL

Annapolis Rowing Club cleans up at US Rowing’s Masters Nationals

Some belated congratulations are in order for the Annapolis Rowing Club, who went all the way to Ypsilanti (say it with us, IP-suh-lan-tee), Michigan, for the US Rowing Masters National Championships back in mid-July. Facing 130 other clubs and 2,100 other athletes, the six boats and eight rowers of the ARC managed to bring home four medals and a victory in the Men’s Masters Club 50 four-person with coxswain. This achievement is all the more notable considering the smoke from 858 active Canadian wildfires prevented racing on Friday. Congratulations to all rowers, and we can’t wait to see you practicing on the bay. ($)

🛠️ P&Z FAQS – You can’t believe everything you read on the internet (crazy, right?) and the city’s Dept of Planning & Zoning wants to clear up some misinformation that’s been circulating lately, specifically about the Zoning Unlocked Phase 2 Report. So earlier this week, P&Z put out an FAQ about Zoning Unlocked to clear up any confusion we might have. It’s always good to get our questions answered!
