Did you know this week (July 18–28) is Buy Local Week in Maryland? Governor Wes Moore celebrated last week by hosting the Governor’s Buy Local Cookout (check out the menu). Arundel Ag and AAEDC celebrated over the weekend with A Taste of Arundel Grown at Homestead Gardens.

So how will you celebrate?

Buy Local Week is all about encouraging Marylanders to incorporate at least one locally grown, produced, or harvested product into their meals each day. To do our part to celebrate and connect these hard-working growers and producers with you lot, we’re spotlighting one local business each day this week.

Morris Hill Farm 🍳

We love a good story about a boat. We love a good story about dogs. So wait until we tell you about what happened on Watermark’s Harbor Queen last week. The tour company teamed up with the Bowie Police Dept., the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Dept., and volunteers from Chesapeake K-9 for bloodhound training.

Cooper and Meadow got sniffs of a Harbor Queen steering wheel swab in the parking lot. As part of their training process, they were able to follow their noses through the parking lot, down the dock, onto the boat, and straight to the source – no easy feat with all the smells and distractions downtown.

ICYMI, ZIPS Cleaners Owner Jole came to us unsolicited to iron out (get it?!) a way to support Annapolis Hope. 🐴 Annapolis Family Day Festival: Enjoy food and product vendors, a children’s village, horseback riding, and more! The 8th annual free event at Bates Athletic Complex is from 8 AM to 9 PM.

Not to sound cliché, but . . .this summer has been hotter than Hades. 🔥 With that in mind, this week’s itinerary for kids has an indoor focus to escape the heat.

Monday 7/22: 📖 🌼 Enjoy a children’s story along a path in the picturesque Paca Garden. Take a self-guided garden stroll anytime from 10 AM to 5 PM. GA is only $5. If you can’t make it Monday, know the self-guided stroll is available anytime the garden is open.

Tuesday 7/23: Kids in grades K-2 can practice reading skills through books, activities, and games at the Early Readers Book Club. 📚 Held at Annapolis Library in Room 216 from 4–5 PM.

Hear that?👂 It’s the sound of musicians warming up all around Annapolis. There are plenty of music events happening this week, so let’s get into it:

🎷 The USNA Band’s Brass Ensemble plays at Annapolis City Dock on Tuesday 7:30 PM. Expect a mix of traditional and contemporary pieces perfect for a summer evening.

⛪️ The USNA Band’s Clarinet Quartet will play as part of the Zimmermann Summer Chamber Music concert series in the Naval Academy Chapel on Thursday at 12:30 PM.

📖 Join Annapolis Opera for its Stories Through Music interactive program at Broadneck Library on Thursday at 6:30 PM, when kids can explore the meaning behind classical and popular songs.

🎻 Music and movement come together in Live Arts Maryland’s “A Year in Vivaldi: Selections from Vivaldi's Four Seasons” featuring the Movement in Music Ensemble on Saturday at 7:30 PM.

Didn’t summer just start? It might feel that way, but Navy football season is right around the corner. Training camp commences July 31, and if you’re a football fan, you’re going to want to mark your calendar for some great pre-season events:

And don’t forget the first game of the season is August 31 at noon. It’s a home game against Bucknell and you can catch it on CBS Sports and the Navy Radio Network.

People to watch: We’re keeping an eye on seniors Colin Ramos (LB) and Daba Fofana (FB), this season’s captains. And this will be the second year for head football coach Brian Newberry.
