TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. This morning, we don’t have a witty intro for you. This morning, we hope you’ll join us in a moment of silence for the 2,977 people who lost their lives on this day 25 years ago and the nearly 10,000 more who have since died of 9/11-related illnesses.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • O’Loughlin’s turns 40

  • Naptown Flea on Maryland Avenue

  • City council’s big Monday

Let’s get to it.

— Ryan Sneddon

P.S. Advance happy birthday, Cindy W!

The Maryland Seafood Festival is back at Sandy Point State Park starting tonight! The festival kicks off by honoring the 25th anniversary of 9/11, with all three bands featuring former service members and special discounted tickets available for first responders.

Or come hungry later this weekend for fresh Maryland seafood, live music, local vendors, eating contests, cold drinks, and one of the best waterfront views on the Chesapeake Bay.

And you definitely won’t miss this year’s biggest guest: Mama Duck, the world’s largest rubber duck, standing more than 60 feet tall on the beach.

Planning to come Saturday? VIP and General Admission Anytime tickets are already sold out. Grab a Late Entry ticket before those are gone, too, or kick off Sunday with the inaugural Big Ducking Run! Choose from a 10K, 5K, or Fun Run, with Mama Duck waiting at the start and finish and one of the coolest duck-themed finisher medals we’ve ever seen.

THE BIG FOUR-OH

O’Loughlin’s celebrates 40 years in Arnold on Saturday ☘️

Tom Crawford behind the bar at O’Loughlin’s

Photo: O’Loughlin’s Restaurant

Tom Crawford has fed (and watered) the Broadneck Peninsula for 40 years. And tomorrow, he’s letting everybody roast him for it.

The anniversary party starts at noon at 1258 Bay Dale Drive and runs until close. But the times you’ll be most interested in are 2:30 PM (Dublin 5), 4:30 PM (the Roast of Tom), and 5 PM ish (The Grilled Lincolns).

Crawford opened O’Loughlin’s in 1986 in a small storefront on Shore Acres Road. He named it for his mother’s maiden name and let his Buffalo, NY flag fly. In 2000, Tom & crew moved to the current location and the rest, as they say, is history.

  • 🦬 Never been? Start with the Old Bay and butter wings and a roast beef on a Kimmelweck roll.

Here’s to the next 40 years of O’s!

PEOPLE’S CHOICE

And some other big stories, in case you missed them:

🕛 County Council gave itself a raise", 4–3, taking pay from $45,402 to $53,400 in December and $59,400 by 2029. The same five-hour meeting condemned Patriot Front 7–0 and then hit midnight partway through Article 18, the first rewrite of the county zoning code since 2005. The rest of the agenda waits until September 21.

🎻 The Annapolis Symphony dropped Russian violinist Vadim Repin from its November program after online backlash, including from the Embassy of Ukraine, and threats of protest at Maryland Hall.

It’s only natural: the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra is opening Season 65 with Echoes of the Earth, the first concert in its five-program Signature Series, In Nature’s Realm.

The ASO takes over Maryland Hall Oct. 2 & 3 for a season-opening weekend packed with color and energy. Cellist Julian Schwarz returns to Annapolis for the third time to perform Jennifer Higdon’s brand-new Cello Concerto, commissioned by and for Schwarz. Also on the program: Dvořák’s unforgettable In Nature’s Realm and Manuel de Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat.
