THE DIGEST

Arrest made in 1989 cold case murder

Nearly 37 years after Garnet Elizabeth Griffith was found shot to death in her Kensington Way home, Annapolis Police have made an arrest. William Eugene Cook Jr., 52, was taken into custody Oct. 9 at his home on West Washington Street.

Newspaper reports from the week of Griffith’s death report that she was single and found by a friend after colleagues grew concerned when she didn’t report to work. Reports this week state that her boyfriend found her body. Police say she was sexually assaulted and shot in her living room. Cook, then a teenager, lived 100 feet away. He wasn’t mentioned in the newspapers the week of the murder but was interviewed by the police multiple times after Griffith’s death. DNA evidence ultimately tied him to the murder in 2022. Annapolis PD did not respond to the Capital’s inquiry about the three years between the match and arrest. ($)

Horvath’s heroics claim last-second victory: Navy football postgame report

Wow, wow, wow. There are simply no other words for this Navy football season. The team just finds ways to win, even when they shouldn’t. Temple completely dominated the first half on Saturday and if you just read the stats, you’d probably guess Temple won.

  • 520 yards to Navy’s 384.

  • 27 first downs to Navy’s 15

  • 6/12 third down conversions to Navy’s 3/11

And yet, thanks to pure grit and last minute heroics from QB Blake Horvath – most notably a 51-yard TD run to set up a game-winning 2-point conversion pass – the Mids won by a single point to remain undefeated, capture bowl eligibility, and strengthen their grip on first place in the American conference.

Words really don’t do this one justice. Just watch the highlights. 7 minutes well spent. Navy now begins an absolute gauntlet of a second half of the season with just 2 of 6 games at home, three ranked opponents, and of course, Army. Luckily, they have a bye this week to rest up.

Next game: 10/25 at home against Florida Atlantic University (3-3). Tickets are still available from $39.50
