TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. On this day in 1965, the first-ever Subway – then called Pete’s Super Submarine Sandwiches – opened in Bridgeport, CT. Who knows how many Subways there are in Annapolis? Edgewater and Crownsville don’t count.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Favorite food truck opens storefront

  • AACPS schools rank in Maryland’s top 20

  • CNN correspondent coming to Maryland Hall

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Top 50 Public High Schools in Maryland 🏫

Just in time for the first bell, U.S. News & World Report dropped their top 50 public high schools in Maryland. They looked at nearly 25,000 schools nationwide, weighing college readiness, state assessments, and graduation rates. Anne Arundel County had a strong showing with these rankings:

#6 Severna Park (Dylan & Lauren’s alma mater. Not that they’re bragging . . . much. Also ranked #384 nationally. Which sounds like a high number until you consider there are about 32,000 high schools in the country)

#15 South River

#19 Broadneck

We like our cars in the DMV, and this RORO (roll on, roll off) cargo carrier is responsible for transporting almost 5,000 Volkswagens at a time to Baltimore. It’s wild to see one of them so up close and personal - like a cheetah at Busch Gardens.

This particular RORO (built in 2020) is an environmentally conscious car carrier measuring roughly 600 feet in length and having a draft of just 30 feet. It travels 16.5 knots using liquefied natural gas. It’s the first car carrier powered by LNG.

She may look unstable with that wide deck, but this sexy beast is the cutting edge of marine innovation, making the journey between Veracruz, Mexico and Charm City in less than 5 days. That’s a heck of a lot faster than your Jetta.

LOCAL BUSINESS

🗳️🍔 Poll Results: What’s the best burger in Annapolis?

Woah — talk about a meaty debate. More than 550 of you took our burger poll. Two things stood out: Chessie’s Wharf ran away with the crown (20% of the votes), but plenty of you were flipping out that Leo Annapolis’ burger didn’t make the list. Not sure how we forgot it. The Roseda Farms (aka local) beef and Leo sauce are top notch. And it’s only $19.

As for the write-ins, a few names rose to the top: Eastport Kitchen, Galway Bay, and Adam’s on Fourth. And one sizzling quote really stuck: Red Red Wine Bar has a burger that will change your life.” Looks like we’ve got some burger homework for the foreseeable future — and trust us, we’ll gladly bite into this assignment.

Hot take: Choptank’s burger is criminally underrated with just 4% of the vote. We aren’t saying this because they used to advertise. We’re saying this because it’s every bit as good as Chessie’s Wharf and only $3 more for the equivalent burger (double patty and fries).

Chamber of Commerce to Honor 2025 Business Hall of Fame Inductees

The Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce has announced this year’s Business Hall of Fame inductees, highlighting the work of four of the county’s most prolific businesspeople. Among the celebrants are Tom O’Leary, Ted Levitt, Dr. Dawn Lindsay, and Jan Wood. While you might not recognize their names immediately, you know the impact they’ve created within the community.

Tom O’Leary (O’Leary’s Seafood, Chevy’s, and Black Market Bakers), Ted Levitt (Chick n Ruth’s, Scotlaur Inn), Dr. Dawn Lindsay (Anne Arundel Community College), and Jan Wood (Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center Foundation) all have distinguished careers in the business sector, but have also spent decades building philanthropic missions around the area. On October 16, they’ll join other outstanding community leaders in the hall of fame like Carroll H. Hynson Jr., Gary Jobson, Dick Franyo, and many more as they’re honored with the Chamber’s highest honor. Get your tickets here.

Antojitos la Mexicana now has a brick-and-mortar location 🌮

It might be surprising to learn antojitos is Spanish for little cravings when Annapolis clearly has big cravings for Antojitos la Mexicana. The business started with a food truck (one of the most highly rated in town), but recently opened its first sit-down location with an expanded menu at 1912 Forest Drive, Suite 4319, in Annapolis. We love seeing food trucks move up to a brick-and-mortar location. Just look at how well Black Market Bakers is doing.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Get tix to the Annapolis Boat Shows ⛵️

It’s the most important question when you live in an area with this much water access: sailboat or powerboat? TBH, you have a place on the bay no matter which you choose. And there’s something for you at one of the upcoming Annapolis Boat Shows coming to the city in a couple of weeks. The Annapolis Powerboat Show takes over City Dock Oct. 2-5, followed by the Annapolis Sailboat Show on the weekend of Oct. 9-12. Both weekends are opportunities for you to see not only boats but equipment, gear, attire, and other swag, plus take workshops or even take a boat out for a test ride.

For anyone who’s never been to an Annapolis Boat Show, this is Ego Alley like you’ve never seen it. Show organizers use miles of floating docks to turn it into a marina, with boats you can actually get on and tour in person. Plus, there will be reps there from each of the boat companies to answer any questions you have.

Hours for each weekend are:

Thursday-Saturday 10 AM-6:30 PM
Sunday 10 AM-5 PM

We know the boat shows can be intimidating, so we’ve got several guides to help you out:

NAVY SPORTS

Navy grad joins the Jaguars 🏈

In the past 20 years, Navy has seen five grads join the NFL. The fifth was announced earlier this week. Rayuan Lane III’s name was on the Jacksonville Jaguars’ final roster for the upcoming season released on Tuesday. Lane was a sixth-round draft pick, but he stood out because of how well he played on special teams, earning him a place on the 53-man roster with the Jaguars. Only one other Navy grad is currently active in the NFL – long snapper Joe Cardona. He’s also playing in Florida with the Miami Dolphins after nearly a decade with the New England Patriots that included two Super Bowl rings.
