Good morning, Annapolis. It’s a good thing Father’s Day is on the longest day of the year this year because have you ever seen a Dad tell a short story or actually do a “quick” Home Depot run?

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Police chief search

  • Juneteenth rundown

  • Navy football Fan Fest

Let’s get to it.

FREEDOM RINGS

How to celebrate Juneteenth in Annapolis this weekend

Naptown Scoop photo – Juneteenth 2023

Today is Juneteenth! And Annapolis throws one of the best celebrations around. The city has thrown a parade every year since 2021.

First, the quick logistics. City and county offices are closed Friday, June 19, along with the Pip Moyer Recreation Center and the Stanton Center. County curbside trash, recycling, and yard waste run on the normal Friday schedule, but the landfill and recycling centers stay closed until Saturday.

Now the fun stuff:

  • Friday, 3–7 PM – Carr's Beach. A free concert at the legendary Black-owned venue where, during segregation, Annapolis crowds caught the biggest names in music. Two stages, food trucks, and room for a lawn chair.

  • Saturday – Parade and festival. The 6th annual Juneteenth Parade steps off at noon from St. John's College and heads out of the city via West Street. The festival follows at the Bates Athletic Complex from 1–9 PM, with fireworks to close it out.

“The Bathroom Isn't the Problem”

Picture this: you've just finished the bathroom of your dreams.

The tile is perfect. The fixtures are exactly what you wanted. The towels are folded. The candles are lit. For a moment, it feels like a luxury hotel somehow found its way into your house.

The good news? Maintaining it should be as simple as keeping it clean and stocked with fresh towels.

The bad news? Your bathroom doesn't exist in a vacuum.

Salt air, summer storms, moisture, and exterior wear can slowly work their way into a home over time. What starts as a small issue outside, a deteriorating trim board, a failed seal, a little rot in the wrong place, can eventually show up where you least want it: inside the spaces you've invested the most in.

That's why Gold Seal Services focuses on preventative maintenance. We identify and address small exterior issues before they have the chance to become interior headaches, helping protect your home from the outside in.

And if Dad's usual plan is to add it to the ever-growing weekend to-do list, consider this a Father's Day gift he'll actually appreciate: one less thing to worry about.

POPULARITY CONTEST

The clicks are in. These were the most popular stories we covered this week 🏆

And we don't think you'd want to miss these either:

🗳️ Primary day is Tuesday, June 23 – early voting wrapped yesterday. This is your chance to weigh in on our next state and county leaders.

🍣 Gyu Sumi, a high-end Japanese spot promising A5 Wagyu and premium sushi, is headed for 2552 Riva Road – though a full teardown means it may be a while.

⛵ West Marine is closing its Edgewater store as the chain shutters 59 locations nationwide. The Hillsmere shop will remain open.

In other news. . .

👮 To protect and recruit – The hunt for Annapolis' next police chief starts Monday. Mayor Jared Littmann's 11-member search committee, led by Anne Arundel Sheriff Everett Sesker, will first set the criteria, then advertise the job in late summer and hand the mayor a short list. City Council makes the final call. Capt. Amy Miguez stays on as acting chief until then. Littmann fired former chief Edward Jackson in February.

🏫 Rubber stamp – The county school board signed off on its $1.87 billion operating budget for next year, officially adopting the plan County Council approved last week. It funds raises for every employee – a step increase plus a 2.25% cost-of-living bump – with no program or job cuts. Toss in the $174 million capital budget and the total just clears $2 billion.

🏒 Vegas, Baby – Annapolis' own Lacey Eden is going pro. The 24-year-old hockey superstar went fifth overall to expansion Las Vegas in Wednesday's Professional Women's Hockey League draft. She leaves Wisconsin as the only player ever to win four D1 titles in women's hockey in scoring. ($)

🏈 Anchors Aweigh – Pencil in some free football fun. Navy's annual Fan Fest returns to Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday, August 8 at 2 PM. Meet the Midshipmen, play games out on the stadium field, and grab giveaways from Navy Athletics' partners. It's free, it's family-friendly, and it's your first taste of fall before the games that count.

⚽ Group Chat – The U.S. is back on the World Cup group stage this afternoon, and you've got better options than your living room. We mapped out where we’ll be watching the matches, from the Old Stein Inn to Seasalt. Find the watch guide here.
