TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. The world trillion has been all over headlines lately. But just how big is it? Well, if you counted one number every second, it would take a week and a half to reach a million, about 32 years to reach a billion, and 31,688 years to reach a trillion. So yeah, it’s a big number.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Capital SUP’s back on Spa Creek

  • Juneteenth 411

  • Board of Education meeting

Let’s get to it.

Some of Your Favorite Brands Are Finally Coming to Annapolis

There's a lot happening at Annapolis Mall right now.

Over the coming months, several new retailers and experiences will be opening their doors, including AƩropostale, OFFLINE by Aerie, Abercrombie & Fitch, POP MART, Miss A, JACK & JONES, Tesla, Dave & Buster's, and DICK'S House of Sport.

That's a mix of fashion, collectibles, entertainment, sports, and more, giving shoppers plenty of new reasons to stop by. Whether you're looking to update your wardrobe, discover your next obsession, or spend an afternoon with family and friends, there's a lot to look forward to.

With UNIQLO now open and more announcements on the horizon, Annapolis Mall is continuing to grow into one of the area's go-to destinations for shopping, dining, and entertainment.

BRAND NEW

The city wants your two cents on its next look šŸŽØ

Annapolis is getting another makeover — the graphic-design kind, not the City Dock kind.

The city says it's spending the coming weeks evaluating its "overall visual brand system" so everything holds up in a more digital world, and it's asking residents, business owners, and anyone with an opinion to weigh in through a short survey.

We did it and hope you will, too.

I’d wager that most folks don’t know much about Annapolis’ imagery. We’ll start from the top of the flag. The crown is a tribute to Queen Anne for whom Annapolis is named. The rose represents England and the thistle, Scotland.

  • Who Hampshire? The Latin on the banner reads, ā€œI have lived free and will die so.ā€ New Hampshire adopted its more succinct motto, ā€œLive free or dieā€ in 1945. Annapolis adopted its flag in 1965. It was designed by Anna Dorsey Linder and is Annapolis’ only official banner in its long history.

Btw, the survey announcement didn’t reveal what’s being updated and we aren’t trying to imply that the flag is. We just love the motto and thought you’d find it interesting.

šŸø Classic Theatre of Maryland presents Tartuffe in the garden at Reynolds Tavern, Tuesday evenings through August 25. MoliĆØre's con-man comedy, served under the stars at 7:30. Tickets run $61–$89, plus a $25 food-and-drink minimum — so come hungry.

Up next…

šŸŽ¬ The Colonial Players present their 10-Minute Play Festival, July 17–26. Eight brand-new plays by local writers — pirates, aliens, and a few existential crises — crammed into one night at the East Street theater-in-the-round, all for $10.

Juneteenth 2026: What you need to know

Naptown Scoop photo – Juneteenth 2023

Juneteenth marks the day the last enslaved Americans learned they were free. And it’s been a big deal in Annapolis ever since the first parade in 2021.

First, the logistics. City of Annapolis offices are closed Friday, June 19, along with the Pip Moyer Recreation Center and the Stanton Center. Trash and recycling still run on the normal schedule, and Annapolis Transit keeps regular hours. Post offices, county offices, and libraries take the federal holiday too.

Now the fun stuff:

  • Friday, 3–7 PM — A free concert at Carr's Beach, the legendary Black-owned music venue where Black people saw the biggest names in music during segregation in the U.S. Two stages, food trucks, and lawn chairs welcome.

  • Saturday — The 6th annual Juneteenth Parade starts at St. John’s College and winds its way out of the city via West Street. Step off is at noon. A festival follows at the Bates Athletic Complex from 1–9 PM, with fireworks to close it out.

In other news. . .

šŸšµā€ā™‚ļøĀ Chain of Thought – We interrupt our regular Coast 2 Coast 4 ALS updates for a message straight from Rex. To be in the service of others. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable – emotionally and physically. Ahh, it’s just a kiss of breeze on the nose, keep pedaling. All these thoughts have bubbled up regularly over the last 45 days of our ride. For my lovely, beautiful friend & inspiration Laura Olds, for Darrell, Becky, Kristen, Bill McKinney, and so many others. . . I am riding for you and with you always.*

šŸŽ“ Budget Day – The Anne Arundel County Board of Education meets Wednesday at 6:30 PM to adopt its final FY2027 operating and capital budgets — the last word on roughly $1.9 billion in school spending. It follows the County Council, which passed its own budget June 11 with record school funding. Watch on AACPS-TV or go in person.

šŸ„ Back on Board – Capital SUP is returning to Spa Creek. The paddleboard-and-kayak outfitter has opened a downtown spot at 326 First Street. The locally-owned watercraft rental company was born on Spa Creek but hasn’t had an outpost on the north side of Eastport for some time now. We’re excited to see them back.

šŸ€ Court and Country – Navy basketball set the field for the 13th Veterans Classic, and this year it moves to Veterans Day itself. On Wednesday, November 11, Alumni Hall hosts a doubleheader: South Florida vs. St. Joseph's at 3 PM, then Navy welcomes Penn around 5:30.

šŸŽ¶ Pitch-Perfect Plans – The Annapolis Opera unveiled its 54th season, and it swings from comic to tragic. Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance opens the MainStage October 30, and Verdi's Rigoletto arrives in March. In between: a "Pasta & Puccini" dinner, a Mozart showcase, and a children's take on The Ugly Duckling.

šŸƒ Save the Date (Eventually) – Registration for the 2027 Annapolis Running Festival is open now — even if the date isn't. Organizers say the calendar is on hold while Navy-Marine Corps Stadium sorts its schedule, but the first 50 half-marathon sign-ups lock in a $50 entry. Register first, figure out when you're running later.
