THE DIGEST
Library opens expanded space at Annapolis Mall 📚
Anne Arundel County Public Library just added a new chapter to Discoveries: The Library at the Mall. The branch — one of the system’s busiest — expanded by 3,200 sq ft to include a bigger program room, an improved children’s nook, space for middle-grade readers, and a shared workspace. The County contributed $675K and the Library Foundation added $125K to fund the project.
This is Discoveries’ second expansion. It opened in 2018 in a 3,000-sq-ft storefront. In 2020, the library moved to a nearly 13,000-sq-ft space. It’s turned into a real page turner, with 143K visitors and 107,000 checkouts last year.

Dog of the Week: Frankie and Charles 🐾
We’re bringing you two dogs of the week this week, because Frankie and Charles are what’s known as a bonded pair. That means they’re so close that they need to be adopted together — they won’t be happy without each other. Frankie and Charles are actually brothers, being 9-year-old Maltese mixes who came to the SPCA last month. Even though they’re elders, they both have a reputation for being energetic and curious. They are also known to be cuddlers, so be sure you have a fluffy bed ready for them. If you’re able to open your home to not one but two lovable senior dogs, they might be the duo for you.

NAPTOWN SCOOP LOCAL BUSINESS IS POWERED BY . . .
Reynold’s Tavern Plans Updates After Centuries in Annapolis 🛠️
When you’ve been around for centuries, some wear and tear is natural. Established in 1747 by hat maker William Reynolds, Reynold’s Tavern has served as a longtime local landmark, including stints as a library and historic site. Recently, the tavern received a $50,000 National Trust for Historic Preservation grant for renovations, including upgraded courtyard lighting, terrace furniture, and a pergola ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday. The building, purchased by Diane and Dave Rey in 2024 for $4.1 M, continues to serve food and host entertainment. The grant recognizes its role in the “neighborhood’s unique history and identity.” ($)
Best bar or coffeeshop for remote work? 💻
Let’s say it’s a busy workday, but you don’t have to be at an office and let’s be honest, nobody gets any work done at home — where are you going? That’s a question being discussed on the Annapolis subreddit. Water views are considered a bonus (duh). Top suggestions have included Bread and Butter Kitchen (which does have a nice water view), Black Market Bakers, and Bean Rush.
The discussion also raises a few good points about what qualifies for an ideal remote workspace. Is it the atmosphere? Coffee quality? Snack options? WiFi download speed? Opinions vary.
Scoop publisher Ryan offers his endorsement for Bread and Butter Kitchen’s new space “The Hub,” Bean Rush Cafe, Tatte Bakery & Cafe, and Curate Café & Bakery. Scoop writer Dylan (who is writing this story) has a completely different preference — any branch of the Anne Arundel County Public Library (no noise and no pressure to buy anything).

‘Say My Name’ Memorial Unveiling
Tomorrow (Thursday, September 4) at 11 AM, the Say My Name Memorial will be dedicated at Crownsville Hospital Memorial Park Cemetery. This long-awaited tribute honors 1,700+ individuals who died at Crownsville State Hospital, many buried in unmarked graves between 1912–1965 during an era of Jim Crow segregation and neglect. Conceived by the Friends of Crownsville Hospital Patient Cemetery and led by Anne Arundel County, the memorial — inscribed with names of those once identified only by numbers — stands as a solemn recognition of their humanity and dignity.
All community members, descendants, advocates, and allies are invited. Parking and shuttles available at the County Fairgrounds. Note: Parking at the cemetery isn’t permitted.

Concerts are free; donations welcome

No outside alcohol allowed; beer, wine, cocktails, and food are for sale on site so you won’t be hungry or thirsty
BYO chair or blanket
Annapolis Songwriters Festival announces full schedule 🎶
You want to know who’s performing at this year’s Annapolis Songwriters Festival? There’s an app for that. No, really — the Annapolis Songwriters Festival has an official app, and you can access the full schedule there, along with artist bios, venue locations, ticket orders, and all other things festival related. Plus, as you go through the schedule, you can plan which performances you want to attend and create your own saved custom schedule within the app. Get it via Google or Apple app stores.
Fundraiser Focus: AACLC’s Book Fair 📚
If you have fond memories of the Scholastic Book Fair as a kid, here’s something even better: the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council’s annual Book Fair is an event where you can donate your old books, buy new-to-you used books, and support a local nonprofit’s literacy efforts. The AACLC helps adults who are either not yet functionally literate or who are not yet functionally literate in English.
The book fair, now in its fifth year, is set for September 27 from 10 AM – 4 PM at Discoveries: The Library at the Mall. You can donate books through next Monday, September 8, at drop-off locations around the county — that’s an extension on the original donation deadline, so take advantage of the extra time to sift through your bookshelves and find a few you want to pass on to another reader. Email [email protected] for drop-off details.

NAVY SPORTS
Navy football postgame report
College football week 1 is in the books and just like it’s supposed to be (although don’t tell Army or Alabama), it was an easy one for Navy. They rolled the VMI Keydets 52-7 in front of a crowd of 30,014. They even covered the spread (42.5). And as I like to say even though I’ve never gambled in my life: good teams win, great teams beat the spread.
QB Blake Horvath completed 6 of 7 passes before backup QB Braxton Woodson got some reps. Woodson was Navy’s leading rusher on the day with 180 yards and 2 TDs.
WR Eli Heidenreich also had a great game with two TDs and averaging nearly 10 yards per touch whether rushing or passing.
Navy’s next game is also at home this weekend against a slightly more formidable UAB.
We interrupt this newsletter with a WNAV Radio (1430 AM) announcement. The Annapolis-based station has extended its partnership with the Naval Academy Athletic Association through 2027, continuing decades of Navy sports coverage. Broadcasting Midshipmen athletics since 1949, they’ll expand programming for the 2025 football season with the new Navy GameDay lineup, including podcasts, pregame shows, and live broadcasts. Fans can enjoy a full-day Saturday experience with the Anchors Aweigh Podcast (one of our favs 😉), the Navy Football Podcast (another of our favs), and the WNAV Navy Tailgate Show, keeping Navy football and other athletics accessible on air and online across Annapolis and beyond.
