THE DIGEST
NOAA calls for warmer winter โ
Whether you take this as a good thing or a huge bummer, NOAA is predicting warmer-than-average conditions between the months of December and February for our area. This is all thanks to La Niรฑa, a natural climate pattern developing out west due to cooler temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. La Niรฑa will shift the colder, drier temps into the Northwest and Midwest, leaving the southern half of the States and the lower Mid Atlantic warmer, which weโll notice toward mid-December and intro February.
NOAA is pulling their models with a brand-new, $100-million computer system that allows for longer-term predictions. Precipitation models show the Mid Atlantic remaining relatively stable, but NOAA states that they canโt predict snow events more than a week out. (#faithintheflakes? Whoโs with me? โ๏ธ)
Public comments accepted on school scheduling ๐
Got thoughts on school schedules? The Anne Arundel County Public Schools Innovative School Scheduling Workgroup currently has a draft out and is accepting comments through Monday at 5 PM. The draft looks at the strengths and challenges of AACPSโs current 180-day, 10-month school year, and proposes potential new models, such as trimesters.
๐ Trimesters? The idea behind breaking the school year into trimesters would be to reduce burnout for students and teachers while minimizing summer learning loss. For example, a 45/15 model would break the school year into 45-day trimesters with 15-day breaks between each and a 1-month summer vacation. There is also a similar 60/20 trimester model suggested.

New learning platform for AACPS? ๐
Not to sound old, but remember back when most schoolwork was done with pencils and paper? Now so much relies on the digital platform. For the past few years, AACPS has used a learning management system (LMS) called Brightspace that was used during virtual learning during the pandemic. Even though in-person schooling is back in session, teachers still use the LMS capabilities for assignments and communication.
But now the Board of Education is set to vote on a contract with Canvas, a new LMS that Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell recommended. Apparently Itโs easier to use for younger students and itโs set up to let teachers give direct feedback on work. The board votes November 6, and if it approves the contract, AACPS will start using Canvas in August 2025. ($)
Ballot Questions for AA County
Voters in Anne Arundel County will see four questions on their ballots, along with their choice for political representatives and one state-level question. On election day or before you turn in your ballot, be ready to provide your thoughts on:
A: the minimum value for purchases and contracts that are subject to using the countyโs competitive procurement process
B: transparency in county council meetings and legislative sessions
C: changes to the term limits for members of the board of appeals
D: clarify the duties of the County Auditor
Ballot language is often a little confusing, so be sure to read up on the issues before you find yourself in the booth. ($)
